7D and 580 EX II wireless operation

Hi I am experiencing a difficulty in setting up when using the speed light as an off camera slave and using the 7D as master to fire the speed light only and not the on camera flash.

Firstly the speed light is set up as ETTL, slave, channel 1

The camera is flash enabled, ETTL, wireless on, off camera only selected, channel 1

But when fired both flashes operate when I only want the off camera to operate.

Any ideas I have read the manual but doesn't offer any suggestions a you tube video shows the set up operating as I wish.

The flash on camera has to fire to transmit the instructions to the remote flash gun. It shouldn't show in images as it is before the shutter opens but some have reported problems with this (and I have had glare from water when trying this approach)

Ok thanks Paul, it's just that the pictorial in the manual doesn't show a flash but I understand your explanation and shall try it out
