7D 'Amp Glow' (was - Sensor Problems - Long Exposures)

I don't think Nikon's are immune to this problem, going by AndWhyNot's post!!!

D80 and (I think) D200, and their predecessors all suffered, D90 and D300 onwards are fine.

And to whomever mentioned 10stop LEs the issue will be more about exposure duration than available light- I'm sure there's plenty of folk doing 30-120+ sec with their 7Ds

 Yeh you got me there!

Mmm I don't think that was what was meant although it may seem like that. A colleague did some identical tests and didn't get the same problem. It's light leak or a sensor problem on this particular body I am sure.

Just got a call from Park. They are replacing the camera no quibble.:woot:

I know this saga has been a PITA but credit where it's due. Park have been as helpful as they can all the way along with this issue.

There is a very similar issue with both of my Sony DSLRs, and as far as I know many other models.

The purple areas appear in all four corners of the frame, mostly in the top and much worse with high ISO. The only solution I've found is to enable long-exposure noise reduction (dark frame type thing) which seems to eliminate the problem.

New body received yesterday. No amp glow on this copy...

All's well that ends well!

Glad you're fixed but that's a bit of a shocking response from Canon and it's just a shame it's taken so long to get sorted.

Yes it's taken a while but we got there.

Fair play to Park - they have 100% supported me. But they (and me) certainly have been let down by the Canon repairs process for sure.

Like I said. It ended well so lets look forward and start enjoying the 7D again!

Glad to hear this is sorted out. I've been following this to see how it comes to end, and glad you're happy.

Sure says a lot about Park ; and shame Canon couldn't resolve this from their end, but I am sure they have their reasoning (logical, or not).

Now go and enjoy your toy :)

The other thing about my D80 is that the noise got worse over the months. Whatever people say about shutter actuations it pales into insignificance against total exposure time. It's done only 18k actuations and the sensor is completely shagged with so much long exposure stuff. Initially amp glow was only obvious on exposures of 4-5 mins or longer but as the camera's been more and more (ab)used it's now really obvious after 1.5-2mins.

This is an interesting link if you are doing star trails regularly:

basically instead of one long exposure you can do multiple 30 second exposures and combine them. Might be helpful for those with "amp glow"
