Hi

Since Ive had my 7D AF sometimes doesnt work, its only happened twice, with different lenses, mainly when the camera has been stored in my bag, If I take the battery out and put it back in alls well again, as far as Im aware the bag hasnt been unduly knocked about, any ideas

Mine does it sometimes with 100-400 its usualy when Ive zoomed right in onto something.
I just pull the zoom back in a fraction 1/2 press it focuses then go back out again to where i was and it works fine.
I was putting it down to me asking it to do something it couldnt do.

Thanks Scott and Lesley,

I havent tried the zoom, you mention as the 105 is a fixed focal length, if it happens again when the 18-55mm is on I'll try it

So it doesnt need to go back to canon then, or does it ?

If it's under warranty, I'd send it back.

Scott I would be vey gratefull if you would let me know as well please as mine is still under warranty as well.

As a matter of interest are you guys using back button focus ? Im not.

has your stopped AF sometimes Les?

Sometimes I used back button focus, depends what Im shooting

Check your AF settings (menu, C.Fn III in the custom functions menu). Make sure option 4 (Lens drive when AF impossible) is set to 0:Focus search on.

I would've sworn at the weekend that there was something up with the AF on my 7D, turns out I must've changed this setting at sometime....

It could be a fault, but that's probably worth checking before you go sending it off anywhere

hmm i had this with my 70-200, the camera just refuses to focus, nothing happens when pressing the shutterbutton. no idea what settings on mine but its happened twice, only with that lens though - quick off/on and its ok again..common issue that is coming to light perhaps?

sound like it, maybe a firmware update coming.

maybe, it would seem to be a bit more than just an isolated issue

Many thanks Scott for getting back to me with what they said.

It does look like a common issue Matt, Ive used 2 different lens, its happened once with each lens, I was probably in manual as I only shoot manual and occasionally AV, I didnt try just on off my instinct, was, turn off, remove and replace the battery, battery was fully charged on both occasions

I have had the same problem One with the Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 EX DG and also with the 600mm f4 i.s normally it's when im focusing on something close i tend to manually focus when it happens and AF kicks back in
Regards
Richard

ive had a similar problem on my tamron 17-50. think it might need a service.

Hi Richard, sorry I meant manual mode not manual focus, Ill give that a go next time if there is a next which is most likely

ive had a similar problem on my tamron 17-50. think it might need a service.

Was it on the 7D, as you dont say

thats also what my friend said when it did it the weekend he manual focused and it was ok then.

thanks Scott it sounds more wide spread than I thought, looking like it needs a visit to Canon Elstree, they were really good when I sent my 400D off, a courier picked it up and brought it back 4 days later, good as new

I generaly use av or tv but cant remember which I was in when it happened but would think its av as used the most. But do know its on the 300 upwards of the 100-400 when its happened on mine.

I had a Tamron 18-270 lens and it did it reguarly with that on and as time went on seemed to work its way down the lens till it got to about 50mm so lens got sent back I got a refund and got a Sigma which is left on my 50d now so not tried it on 7d.

Makes me wonder now if that lens was ok after all Lol.

Is it happening to those cameras with grips on I just have the single battery on mine.

It happens to me when im in AV mode thats what i tend to use but it's not limited to the 7d the 1d does it as well let me know how you get on. interestingly i never get it with the 5d mk1 or the mark 2 both these have the older AF set up. In very low light and i mean really dark the 5d seems to lock on better than the 7D and 1D.
Regards
Richard

I should just add it is only very occasionally

I use back button focus with the lenses below, and I've yet to experience the problem:

Sigma 30mm f1.4
Sigma 50mm f1.4
Sigma 70-200 f2.8
Sigma 150-500 OS
Tamron 17-50 (not used this very much at all though)
Canon 100mm f2.8 macro (I've had poor focus performance in low light but I put that down to the lens).

On the 150-500 I have had it focus way off into the distance when trying to pick out a difficult subject, I have to find something contrasty to get it back. Again though I put that down to the lens\user error though? It's never just stopped focusing.

edit: Oh, I tend to use manual mode for the majority of stuff.

Its done it once with my Sigma 105mm 2.8 macro, and once with my canon kit 18-55mm non IS lens

In the case of the kit lens, it's probably just the 7D having a hissy fit at the quality (or lack thereof) of the lens ;)
