750Gb drives on the horizon

Yeah I think if I was going to go for one I'd take the peace of mind and install 2 in a RAID1 config or just go nuts and buy 6 for a 3.5 TB RAID5 array lol

We just got a 1Tb drive for the work archive, even though we all 'suggested' that it would be better with smaller drives linked together for safety.

What do we know, we're only the bl**dy photographers....

Problem you still have is what datacenters up until recently would avoid by using smaller disks, that being that a big disk is fine but for data access you still have to channel that through the limits of a controller, therefore alot of smaller disks on a good controller would be far more effecient than one big disk on one controller.

Still at the prices these will probably go for and for sheer storage capacity its hard to say no:)

Not so much on the way ... as already here ...

Around £350 at the mo ... ... USB 2 and all the other stuff ...

I'll be sticking with my 500GB for now ... :D

Apologies if this is old news ... wouldn't be the first time but better done than not ... imo ... :D

:p

I have two IDE 160Gb drives behind a Linksys Network Storage server (one mirrors the other) which was really a cheap network raid solution for home. Now they are full I am back in the market and surprised how cheap things are.

I was quoted today £120 for a SATA 750Gb hard drive and as my enclosures are IDE I would need another £35 each for them so for £310 I could have an upgrade of 590Gb with back-up.

Can anyone do better?

£120 for 750GB SATA - who from, what make and where? Bargain....

Disk is now becoming the cheaper alternative for storage... I still prefer SCSI but it costs!

These new larger disks are using the latest technology, called Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR), which moves magnetization of particles from a horizontal to a vertical alignment, so more bits can fit the same space, that is why the size has almost doubled - very reliable as well. Shame that the performance cannot be doubled however! Seagate drives are very much the leaders and their support and warranty is great, followed shortly by WD. :) Fastest drives however are the smaller WD Raptors! - Ideal for a raid or boot drive :)

Agreed - another satisfied WD Raptor user here

You shouldn't, you should have good IT guys and have a massive SAN network, if you have and it's slow. You need help (not me!).

And Yes I've been told about your IT people and it wasn't good :D :D :D

Carl.

Thanks for other info, all helps when making buying decisions.
