75-300 or 70-200?

I can never work out which is best.... a 75-300 F4-5.6 or a 70-200 F2.8

which is better to sacrifice... the extra zoom or the f stops?

obviously i am talking about taking photos at its extreme length as that would be the reason i would be using it.....so no point saying "Go for the 70-200 and walk closer"! If its birds on a feeder for instance.

I have the 75-300 already. dont know if i ever got a 70-200 would it be able to completely replaced the former? (probably just dreaming anyway!)

With a f2.8 lens you could use a 2x TC without any real issues and end up with a 400 f5.6. I'd suspect that the quality would be a fairly large step up from the lens you have now too. Any f2.8 lens is usualy a far better bit of glass than a f4 to 5.6 version.

If it's a real possibility to swap, I'd grab it with both hands. :)

70-200 f2.8 is a much better option Janice.

I had a 75-300 IS and found it rather soft above 200mm unless stopped down to f8 or so, I now have a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 with their 1.4x TC and although that still only takes it to 280mm the quality is much better.

Matty tried the 2x TC on his sigma and iirc he found it too soft at the long end so replaced it with the 1.4x
 
why not look at a Canon 400mm f/5.6? it'd be the same as using a 70-200 with a 2x tc, but i can imagine the quality being alot better.
 
As the others have said. The 70-200 is not even similar in IQ to the 75-300, totally differen league.

Aside from that the 70-200 is about 4 times heavier and costs... well you know that much.

Lets put it this way. Having got the 70-200 I'm totally sold.

Couldn't agree more Janice - I wouldn't swap my 70-200 for anything now! I've not been disappointed with shots even using the 2x TC either.

What 70-200 are you looking at? What do you plan to shoot? Weddings? Sport?

Sigma have a nice one if you are thinking of a non-IS model but I would strongly advise looking at one of the IS models (f4L IS or 2.8L IS).

Really depends on what you shoot.
 
The cheapest! Birds really. Just something to get close enough.
I will be saving for months and months so its nothing I will be gettting any time soon.

With summer coming I think a macro lens will be my first object of desire!
 
I'd say 70-200 f2.8 or f4 if that's all you can afford. The 70-200 f4L IS may be a good option too depending on what other subjects you shoot.

Macro - I have the Canon 100 f2.8 and is a great lens.
 
sigma 70 - 200F2.8 EX DG HSM is the one i have, with the 1.4 EXTC. bit short at zoos, but its a top class lens. the 2x TC was not good, only marginally better than the 70-300 in pq, so i returned that and kept the 1.4, that gives excellent quality still. Ive now ordered a 170-500mm to go with the 70-200, should give me a huge amount of backache lugging them around.

Don't rule out the sigma 100-300mm F4 either. Goes well with the 1.4X extender too to give you 140-420.

..its just the sprinkling of the mayqueen...

i like motorsport but always found the 300mm sigma a tad short, and the same at zoos, so the 170-500 should open some interesting doors...

Nice spec - 9 blades is pretty cool. And for a 500, not a bad weight either. be interested to see the results from that, Matty

....so,.... coming back down the Stairway and into real life....(I know, I know, but this thread is about Janice and her new lens), ....I've spent ages deliberating and have finally placed my order with Kerso for the Canon 70-200 f2.8 plus the x2 converter. I hope that this way, I'll be able to do wildlife with the converter on (f5.6 and above) and without it......absolutely anything! I know it's a lot of pennies, but I've had a B awful 12 months, and having lost 1 stone in weight :woot: I reckon I deserve a Mothers day pressie from me to me!!
