Hi folks, I'm looking for some advice/input please.

I'm currently using a 700D, with the following lenses Canon 10-22mm, 17-55mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4 and Tamron 70-300mm VC.

I'm really starting to take a liking for motorsport photography but will probably continue to use my camera more generally for other things like travel photogaphy, say about 50% of the time. Whilst I'd like to spend more time travelling to motorsport events I don't think I'll ever find myself going consistently every other week for example.

I'm considering upgrading to a 70D. GAS had started to get the better of me and I was looking at a 7D Mk2 but I'm now trying to reign myself back in.

There are a number of features I like in the 70D v's the 700D including the increased direct access to functions and micro focus adjustment. I understand for motor sport the auto focus should be better than the 700D.

I'm trying to get a feeling for if I'd notice a significant difference in performance for motorsport with the 70D v's the 700D.

Also more generally should I expect a noticable improvement in high ISO performance for the 70D compared to the 700D?

Looking at the 70D v's the 7DMk2 obviously the reduced cost is a plus, I also think I might miss the touch screen I've got used to on the 700D if I went for a 7DMk2. However I don't want to buy the 70D and then regret not getting the 7DMk2.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Cheers
Mark

FPS not critical for motorsports, depends how good a photographer you are. Yes the 7D MKII a great camera, but you can achieve similar results with a 70D or 700D for that matter. The 70D inherited the 7D autofocus system minus the focus point expansion, but you don't need that for motorsport. It all depends on what the OPs willing to spend

Thanks all

I appreciate the 7DMk2 will be better for motorsport. However I'd rather not spend that much extra if I'll see a significant improvement over the 700D with the 70D. Whilst I could afford to spend the extra I think I'd rather spend it else where, putting it towards a 100-400mm Mk2 for example.

Mark, if you are anywhere near Lincoln at any time give me a shout and arrange a meet and you can try my 70D and 7D MkII and see which you prefer with my 100-400 L II. You'll get some fantastic shots from either body with the lens. I mainly use the 7D MkII with it but quite often 'borrow' the wife's 70D for a blast too.

The 70D autofocus is excellent if you can't stretch to a 7D mkII

I am looking at upgrading camera body as well, had been looking at 70D and then talk to one of the guys in the camera shop mention the 7D mark ii and now in a fix. Please let us know how you get on and what you decide please. What do you think of the 17-55mm 2.8 ? Toss up between that lens and 24 70 F4 L

Very happy with my 70D and 17-55mm f2.8, it's a good combination. As for the 24-70mm f4, great lens, but won't you miss 24mm on a crop?

Hi Pete
Yes I know what you are saying but just thinking of the L glass but like the idea of the 17 - 55 2.8

If you want L and wide, then there's the 17-40mm f4 or variations of the 16-35mm (f2.8 MKI and MKII or f4 versions).

The canon 17-55mm f2.8 perfectly suited for a cropped sensor, but depends if you want a EF-S lens in your collection.

I cant speak for the 7D, but I'm very happy with the 70D and for sports the tracking autofocus mode works really well.

Hi Pete
Thanks for your reply. i will just have to which way to go but the 15-55mm F2.8 seems a good idea.

The only extravagances you regret are the ones you dont make (Oscar Wilde).

Well just to update I opted for the 70D which arrived from HDEW on Tuesday. Won't get a chance to use it in anger for a bit but I'm impressed so far.

I'd briefly held one in Curry's previously to check button positioning but there are a few simple things that I hadn't appreciated before.
The lock button on the mode selection dial for one. I've accidentally knocked the dial round a few times on the 700D.
Despite the extra weight the increased size of the grip makes it a lot more comfortable to hold when I'm not using it but holding it by my side.
Also feels better balanced with the 17-55mm f2.8.

Thanks for your input

I has the same problem trying to decide 70d or 7d. Finally went for the 70d and couldn't be happier. You can put the money you save on your new lens.
