Much has been made recently of the 70 hours a week doctors and nurses are working

What about the hgv drivers? 15 hour days is pretty much standard through most of the industry and has been for many years, with a max of 9 or 10 hours driving daily. However this has been raised to 11 hours during this crisis With a break of 45 min after 5.5 hours up from 4.5 hours.

I wonder how many non drivers realise that all those hgvs trundling down the motorway could have someone at 14 hours into their 15 hour shift behind the wheel.

Please spare a thought for them during all this too. Thankfully my job doesn’t require that kind of work and I’m currently sat at home.

My mates drives for living but I didn’t realise the days could be so long

Only 11 1/2 hours last night :)

Respect to anyone who's out there working, whatever your role, and keeping the country running. I hope these people get the recognition they deserve when this is all over.

:agree:

And not only that, they are often away from home for days at a time and treated like dirt by some of the firms that they have to deliver to.

Not trying to belittle what you have said, but don't forget the sheep farmers at this time of year. for some of them 70 hours a week would be luxury.

Absolutely. Farmers in general probably work more than anyone, 24/7, 365 days a week. No doubt there are other vocations similar, it’s just hgv is the one I know, as I’m in the same industry.

Very true. My youngest son is a farmer / agricultural mechanic / fabricator, works on a large mixed farm. He has special skills and earns more than most per hour, but still a very low wage and much harder work than in most industries. He earns a lot, but only because he has to work non stop, especially during the entire and very long harvest season. And it's also a very dangerous job.
