I have a canon 70-300 which i havent used for a while so i thought i would sell it.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-70-300mm-4-0-5-6-USM-Lens/dp/B000B84KB6

However, i tested it to make sure its working and there seems to be a problem. Bear with me while i try and describe it.

On my 5d2, centre focus dot activated, IS on. When i press the shutter half way for it to focus i hear the IS kick in but it then clicks from side to side, re focusses and then stops.

The image in the viewfinder seems to jump left then right a few times (all at high speed) and then it seems to not want to focus and just keeps fucussing in and out.

Any ideas / experience

Is your battery low on the camera? Only asking as I had similar with a brand new 17-55 on my 400d. I panicked at first then noticed my battery was low. Charged it up and all was fine

Battrey fullycharged, all contacts clean. Although it does have afilter on it so i may try it without but why would it suddenly cause an issue.

I think there must be something up with the focus / motor...

Try with IS turned off, should hopefully tell you if its the focus motor or the IS somehow messing with it.
