70-200mm f2.8 with 2 x TC and 30d

Yes I have this setup but with the IS version, which is also retained!! :)

Isnt there a IQ problem with the x2 and this lens??

It depends what you're looking for.

I wrote a bit in my post giving my opinion and then dleted it before posting and stayed with the simple answer to the question.

Dakid's post today gave me the opportunity to issue the warning.

There are differing opinions it seems - some say they notice no real degredation of quality, others tut a lot and suck air in through their teeth in the style of a mechanic. :D

I use exactly the set up BB was asking about, including using it for action stuff from time to time, and haven't had any real problems with either quality or AF speed.

I was always under the impression that it didn't autofocus? It doesn't work for me on my 20D, although I haven't tried it with my 40D. I'm tempted to try the tape trick but wouldn't want to damage anything...

I got this setup by selling my 100-400 (as I needed the 2.8 at the closer range) and there is a small drop in IQ but thats only noticable through actually testing it properly, out in the field I'm actually happier with the results than I was with my 100-400!!

It should autofocus, the 20D can autofocus up to f5.6 the same as the 40D. The 70-200 f2.8 with the teleconverter gives you 140-400 f5.6.

I actually use my 20D with a teleconverter that doesnt register itself to the body so i can autofocus at f8 but it can be slow and hunt quite a bit, I still find it usefull though. Taping the pins should give exactly the same result.

Yeah it'll work. Autofocus may not be quite as responsive though, and you may get some dodgy looking images.

I use one on my 300 2.8 from time to time. In decent light it's usually spot on, I generally do a quick burst of 3 images to ensure a sharp one (for action stuff).

I was not happy when I tried this combo,I found AF a lot slower and unless stopped down to f8 IQ was not so good, now when used with the 1.4TC I am very happy the 2X
is good on my 300L ***.
