anyone used this combination? V Tempted to go and buy one and just wondering if its worth having. Will be using it for motorsport and also static car shoots... I know it doesn't have IS but is it still a suitable enough lens?

I'm expecting mine to be delivered tomorrow from MPB and I'm like a kid at xmas. I'll be using it on a 60D.
From reading a few threads on here it may be a bit short for motorsport but a 1.4x would help.

I haven't shot cars with mine but it matches the 7d very nicely when wandering round zoos and trying to get photos of a small child on the go!

Ah great, I have found one for around £370 so very tempted by it, that price for L glass is good I thought!

I'm a bit gutted that people say its a bit short though :-(

This is what mine will be mainly used for, well the kids and the dog! :D

See I rarely shoot stuff like that :( usually all my shoots are of static cars/car shows, or moving cars IE track days etc!

I was looking at getting a 70-200mm L F/4 but im the same as you if I was to use the 70-200mm it would be for motorsports/race tracks and I hear from a lot of people 200mm just isn't enough and the 100-400L is way out of my price range.

Exactly the same, 100-400 is way too much just now! Oh dear :( oh well at least I found this out before I went and spent £400 beans! ha

Ive used mine on my 20d and only just updated to a 7D, its a amazing lens for the money, link to my flickr below, only the bird and wide shots wasn't with the 70-200.

Great shots Dex, all look v close, are you on a media pass or trackside pass there?

Mostly NW region, usually Oulton park. I have a 75-300 USM that I used when I first started but need something alot sharper. Knew I would lose the range by cutting off 100mm but just thought I could compensate by perhaps trying to get closer, your shots look close enough though!

Spectator side, thats the good thing with my local circuitt is no fences.
If you were happy with the reach with your 75-300 you can always crop. You will notice a big difference in everything compared to your old lens, I was amazed at the difference between my 55-250 and the 70-200.

I suppose, I was thinking about a 1.4X too but ideally I would rather not as its more money :( I suppose I can get it and if there isn't enough reach its always still a good one to have in the bag! :)

I wouldn't spend more money at the moment, theres no need, youve got 18mp so you can just crop and can still print at a reasonable size

Use my IS version occasionally with a 1.4 TC, works well and still get AF ok on a 7D

Very nice lens and not noticeably worse with the TC, could be a bit short for motorsport though

Good point! I will have to think about it!

Thanks for the info! It was going one of two ways if I'm honest, I was looking at the 70-200 for track days but then also considering getting the 10-22mm for static shoots for interior etc, so may look at the 10-22 now. No point in rushing into a lens just because it has the red ring on the front if it's not going to do the job I need it for, I'll have to save up and maybe go for a 100-400!

I've got one but haven't had the chance to use it for motorsport yet.
Its very sharp though..

This is a 100% crop or thereabouts. 200mm, f4, 1/1250

I've got a 100-400 too. The reason for getting the 70-200 was portability - the 100-400 is great and I wouldn't be without it, but it is a big, heavy lens so if you are taking it on the off chance of needing a telephoto its quite a bit to be lugging around. The 70-200 is pretty small and light so ideal for the "just in case" moments.

Sorry when you say 100% crop what do you mean by that? I'm probably having a blonde moment and will realise when someone explains?

The image viewed at 100% then a crop taken.

Thanks Andy, definite blonde moment for some reason I had a thought that he had cropped the image 100% .. but then there would be nothing left... now I'm confused
