my 70-200mm lens needs repairing. it has an international warranty and my proof of purchase says its 1 1/2 years old

any idea how long the international warranty is valid for?

One year.

Does anyone know if the L series lenses are prone to failing in the short term?

I've just bought an L lens with a US warranty and I was kind of looking forward to a life time of hassle free use.

Am I being naive?

But smearing it in Marmite isn't covered by the warranty Gary... :D

generally L series lenses last forever Ubik, I have a 1980 80-200 f2.8L and its dammed good even now

The warranty on L series lenses is not country specific like the body, lenses have an international warranty.

I would suffest that you contact Canon and argue that the lens should reasonably last longer than 18 months. If I bought an £800 lens and it failed after 18 months I would be straight on to them. UK legislation (may not a help here) stats a product shuld last a reasonable length of time and if it fails due to a manufacturing fault they are still obliged to replace/repair it as if it was under warrenty. So first thing first is to contact them.
