Yes
I've had a look in the search but can't find the answer, but does anyone know if my 400D will auto focus with a 2x extender and my 70-200 F4L (non-IS)??

I've searched and found conflicting answers so I thought best to ask the experts ;)

No wont autofocus with the F4 and a canon 2x tc as it takes it past the F5.6 (max for AF on your 400D)

The F2.8 will as the 2x tc takes it to F5.6

Hope this helps

And don't bother taping the pins.
I tried my 5DII with a 2xTC + 70-200 f4 IS and with the pins taped all it managed was to hunt badly around the desired point of focus. It never achieved focus lock.

And the IQ with the 2xTC isn't great.
I got hardly any more detail than simply cropping from full frame, just lots more pixels spread over the same amount of detail. Which is good for sorting noise at high ISO, but little else.

However - I regularly use a 1.4TC - it's great.
Focus is nearly as fast as normal (even in low light) and the drop in image quality is barely noticeable, even when pixel peeping.

Thanks all. It's a shame that it won't work as I thought it might have been a better solution than my 75-300 as the quality at 300 isn't too great.

The Canon 70-300IS (not L) is a belter of a lens and much improved over your 75-300.

But if you're buying the 70-200 F4 then the increase you get with it, will outway the loss of 100mm compared to your 75-300

If you use the 70-200 F4 with a 1.4x TC it will give you damn near 300mm, in fact its 280mm or with the crop factor for your camera 448mm @ F5.6

This comparison chart with the 70-200 + 1.4 tc and the canon 70-300 is USM shows you will get much better IQ from the 70-200 + TC combination.

Comparison here

Could try a bit of manual foucusing see how its goes,we used to in the past :)

Yeah wouldn't do any harm. Might be tempted when one comes up at a good price in the classifieds.

I have already got the 70-200 and the 75-300 got relegated to the cupboard straight after due to the poor IQ, but I do miss the extra reach.

Still pipe-dreaming at the minute as the next real lens on my hit list will be the 17-40 :)
