Hi all,

A miserable walk photo-wise, so I decided to push the limits of the 70-200 f/2.8 MKII and the 2xII converter on my 1DsMKII.

The image has not been de-noised (which I would do if outputting for printing) or otherwised processed. It has gentle output sharpening for screen use from lightroom.

Firstly the full shot @ 400mm, 1/30s !!, f/6.3, ISO400, handheld!

Then 100% crop:

Could I have got better without going to the expense of a 400mm f/2.8 I wouldn't use?

I doubt I'd have got away with 1/30s on the 100-400 and I've never liked push-pull zooms.

I doubt I'd have got away with 1/30s on the 300 f4 L IS + 1.4x

I'm sure the 400 f/5.6 would be sharper, but not convinced I'd get away with 1/30s even with a monopod & perhaps not with a tripod in this situation.

Anyway, I think this is pretty good for a 2x converter and is perfect for me as I rarely need more than 200mm and have previously sold 400mm f/5.6 and 300mm f/4 lenses through lack of use!

Hi Phil,

I think that is a superb shot. My fight to resist the mkII and TCx2ii has now weakened even further ;-)

The 70-200 MKII is a stunning lens, but 1/30s @ 400mm!! Strewth!

Indeed Phil,

At 1/30 at 200 is pretty amazing, add the TC and it is stunning. A combination of hardware and skill at show there !!

Im away to shred the credit card before I land myself in trouble :-)

Amazing Phil, can't believe it still be that detail when you crop at 100%.
So sharp and clear.

Smashing couple of images and i thought my Bigma taking a shot 1/100 @ 400mm on OS was good but 1/30 is exceptional, did you try any more at those settings just to check it wasn't a one off

Excellent for 1/30 sec,I was thinking of getting the 70-200 mk2 with the 1.4 and 2x mk3 teleconverters.Very tempted now to sell my 400 f5.6 and 70-200 f4.

Looks excellent. What does a 100% crop of the other duck look like? Curiousity and all that..

The other duck is slightly out of the plane of focus in this shot.

If you regularly shoot birds in flight then the 400 f5.6 is a better bet as the focussing will be quicker. Otherwise I'd not hesitate to make the change.

The 70-200 & 1.4x II is superb wide open. With the 2x II it is good wide open but really shines from f/6.3. No idea about the mkIII's. I heard they were optimised for the new 300/400 f2.8 lenses. Not sure if they perform much differently on the 70-200 II - if they are better still I'm very tempted!

Might post a few more pics with 2x II later, but the point of the post was the combo of the amazing IS and IQ with the 2x!!

You've got me wishing I could afford a 70-200 f/2.8 MKII and 2x MKII now!
Image quality looks on par with the 100-400, and I'd take better IS above faster focussing. That 100% crop is exactly what I'd expect from my 100-400 at 400/6.3.

Ah well, maybe when I've won the lottery :).

I think this also shows that canon is capable of producing a really stunning 100-400L MKII if they want to.

I run this combination after taking some advice from Marac, i was considering buying a 100-400, but i'm now glad i didnt! The results from the lens and extender are just amazing!

Well done mate!
