70-200 F4L - does a x1.4 TC make that much difference

Quick test i did today hand held sorry.

Not the same as you want but thats my 70-200 f2.8 with the 1.4x TC At f4

The 70-200mm f4 is a great little gem of a lens, my first zoom for digital. The light conditions are the real factor when playing with TC's, the canon 1.4x TC when added to the 70-200mm f4 looses an f-stop of light getting to the sensor, making the combo a 98-280mm f5.6 lens, in good light this is no problem, but 1 f-stop of light in grey or fading light is significant and can be the difference in obtaining an image, also dependant on ISO (higher the ISO the more grainy, noisey, the image), aperture, shutter speeds and what the subject of the image is.

What is a TC and where can I get one for my 70-200? Does it basically times the zoom by 1.4 and make the aperture smaller? :thinking:
 
Basically, yes, but also remember the crop factor of your camera - which I think is 1.6. Thus, taking into account the sensor of your camera the 70-200 becomes a 112 -320. When you then add in the TC, it becomes a 156 - 448 lens. The down side is you lose an F stop, thus the lens becomes a 5.6.
