70-200 F4 v 70-200 F4 IS

For the 70-200L 4? I've tried three cheapo ones. First one marked the lens until I took a file to it, then the lock unscrewed itself while I had a sling-strap attached to it.

So I bought another one that turned out to be made of plastic (no mention of that in the Amazon ad) and was simply not capable of supporting the lens properly. So I sent that back and got another one, which turned out to be the same as my original with a slightly different paint job, so that went back too. No probs with any of the Amazon Marketplace sellers on that score.

Now I'm back where I started, and I'll see if a locking washer can make it secure. A collar is nice to have, but the lens is quite light so you can often get by without one even on a tripod. People say the copies are the same as the genuine Canon ones, but they're not. Whether they're 'good enough' is a different question.

Thanks. To be honest its not something i have ever felt a need for in the past, but ive been trying to shoot the moon recently with my 70-300IS and am finding my Redsnapper a bit loose and fiddlly to adjust, im wondering if the ring will make it easier to get some extreme angles with the new lens without too much mucking about. Its heavier than the 70-300Is although not by much but it will ballence better with the ring.

Sounds like ill stump up for the Canon one.

Bit OT, but how about getting a three way head, bought a used Giottos one from the classifieds for about 20 quid http://www.amazon.co.uk/Giottos-MH5001-Head-Quick-Release/dp/B000VBMNVM

Big old lump and rock solid, works fine with my 70-200 f/4 and no mount ring, often see them going cheap and damn sight better value than the tripod mount ring. Still use my ballhead most of the time, but its great for odd occasions such as you want and many others too

Thanks for all your help

i think that im going to look at the 70-200 F4 IS quite seriously and go from there

I have both at the minute (selling the non IS). I originally bought the non IS version but i found some shots were not that sharp due to camera shake at the longer end. Also i have started to a bit of video and the IS makes a massive difference. Weight wise there is little in it. Hope this helps

I own the 70-200 f4 non IS and it is the best lens I have ever owned ! Buy it and you won't be disappointed !

Hi all

I plumped for the IS version and picked up a used but Mint copy today

However the lens make a noise like a kettle is boiling with the IS mode enabled but is silent with it off

Is this normal?, i know none of my other IS lenses have made it

Thanks

Stephen

Mine does make a noise but i must have a very quite kettle.

It's not loud but my others are silent

I do notice a slight hum which is louder than my 17-55 but i don't think you can pick it up on video.

It's not quite a hum, I'm outside now and it's undetectable. Can only hear inside

I just went into Jessops and they assure me it's normal for this lens
