Hey guys,

Been offered one of these secondhand for a reasonable price, I do have a 55-250IS and have been very pleased with the sharpness of it, so the question should I wait for a 70-200 f4 IS or will it be just as good as the 55-250 albeit the IS.

Hi,

Have the 70 - 200 F4L Non IS, it is a good lens, have not missed IS on it, if it helps this was taken @ 200mm F4.

I also have the 70-200 F4L, and it is honestly an absolutely superb lens for the money.

Why get it?

As with the rest of the L series, it's weather sealed, usm is nearly instant to focus, and it's silent.

Here's one of my pictures using it! Not the best, as i don't really use it much, but other than my most recent HDR here's one of mine at 200mm, and at f4.

Yep, Taken hand held.

Worth pointing out that the 70-200 f4 IS/non-IS are NOT weather sealed, in fact only a few of the L range lenses are.

Hmm, it looks like the f/4 IS DOES have dust and moisture sealing after all, the NON IS certainly doesn't. The easy way to tell for any lens to is see if there's a rubber seal near the mount.

I lugged my 70-200mm F4 L Non IS around the Edinburgh festival and was absolutely chuffed with the end results - sharp and clear and it was wet dull and 'orrible out!

This is one of my faves from that session with not much PP at all its a lovely lens!

There are some people that need that extra stop or the IS, some could well need both but the plain truth is that most people need neither.

I love this lens and I reckon that over the years it's got 99% of the shots I'd have bagged with any of it's bigger brothers..... and when it does get 'em, it does it faster and sharper than anything else I've met in that range.

Correct, both the f/4 IS and f/2.8 IS have weather sealing whilst neither the non-IS versions do.
