Hello All

Im sure like other items of gear you may have seen this a million times.

I will soon be upgrading my gear again and im set on getting this lens in particular.

My question is for another £200 - £300 is it worth getting IS?

Thanks alot

Dan

It depends really on what you will be using it for.

If it will be for sport/outdoor type stuff then there is no need of the IS.

However if you would be doing indoor/wedding type stuff then I would say the IS is vital.

I had the non-IS and now have the IS, the stabiliser is excellent on it and well worth the price.

Even if you are outdoor the IS helps when the sun is off the mark, you are in deep shadow, or it's a plain old gloomy day in January.

I'd say it's worth it

If you can afford the IS get it, it really is as simple as that for me sadly I can never afford the IS.

I can afford it but for £300 more i wanted to know the difference

Up to three stops of extra hand-holdability. Sharp pictures in a much greater range of conditions.

Plus - bearing in mind that IS reduces camera shake at all times - potentially better micro-sharpness at higher shutter speeds.

You are looking to spend a grand on a really fine lens. Bit of a no brainer if you ask me but you'll do well to get it for £200-300 extra - more like £450. If cost is a problem, and of course it is always an issue, I would rather get a used IS lens than a new non-IS.

BTW the new MkII lens is an absolute stonker. Incredibly sharp even with a telecon :D

If you have the cash......then go for it. I pondered over the same decision, and am so glad I got the IS version. More or less does away with the need for a tripod on most shots.

I have been trying to decide the same, having had a play down at Focus with the IS version - switching it on and off, I've decided to save that bit extra and go for the IS version.

Would love the mkII, but think it's going to be a long time before it's down to my price level :)

I reckon the IS is very useful but as it stands, I can have a used 2.8IS and a used 4IS for less money and it gives me more flexibility
