Hi,

I am a canon user with a 7D and my current zooms are the 17-40L, 24-105L and sigma 120-300 f2.8.

I don't routinely take the sigma out with me because of it's size and weight, instead I keep it for motorsport events or when I know I will need it. So I'm thinking of getting a 70-200 that I can take out in my bag, that way I Will have three zooms with me covering 17 - 200 mm.

I have about £500 to spend so I would be looking at the canon 70-200 f4 without IS. This would make all of my zooms f4. Or I could go for the sigma 70-200 where I would get f2.8 for my money. So the sigma has an extra stop but I guess the canon may be better quality.

Which would you choose or recommend? The canon f4 or the sigma f2.8?

If the Canon is a f2.8 as well I would say the Canon for sure but since is the f4 version and the budget you have i would say the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM II. Is a good lens for the money and you have f2.8 to use in low light. The Canon f4 lens is still very good. depend on what you want ...... i personally would go for the sigma simply the f2.8 is good to have.

I suppose I would be happy to consider used lenses too but I still don't think that allows me to get either of the canon 2.8s within my budget.

So yeh it's probably still between the canon f4 and sigma 2.8 then.

Canon F4.0 for sure.

Sigma is reputed to be good if you get a good copy.

Do you need F2.8?

+ Canon F4.0 probably better suited to your criteria regarding size and weight.

If you don't get a good copy, change it.

The same can happen with a Canon lens. For example, one of the hire companies states that one of Canon's popular and quite expensive lenses has the highest fail rate of any of the lenses on their stock. Is that a reason for not buying a Canon lens?

hi i have the sigma its a great lens and mines sharp at 2.8 too never had a problem with it,i do find 9/10 im shooting at f4 or above.i hear the canon f4 is super sharp at f4.i think if you get the sigma like me you will shoot at f4 and above almost all of the time.

Do you need F2.8?

I can't say that I need 2.8, I suppose I can always use the 120-300 if I did, but it would be nice to have.

I'm more concerned about getting the best quality lens than about getting f2.8 I think.

maybe go to the shop and try the two to see which one you like best before you decide.

Is a tough choice and you will always go two different answers, your call and personal pref at the end of the day.

Exactly, you have f/2.8 all the way to 300mm (which I am a bit jealous of ). Canon f/4 is incredibly sharp yet light lens and will easily find space in a bag. My test of Sigma HSM II showed that it was clearly inferior to Canon at 200mm, but excellent at 70-100mm wide open.

I always chip in on the Canon vs Sigma 70-200 threads (there's one every week!) as I rate the Sigma so very highly.

My Sigma 70-200 EX HSM II is sharp as a sharp thing drinking salted lemon juice, it's very good indeed. It did need ever so slight micro adjusting (as quite a few third party lenses will to make them perfect) and I can put my hand on my heart and say it's as sharp as my primes at any focal length, it's a fantastic lens. It's also very good indeed with a Kenko x2 TC.

I've tried the canon f/4 and iq wise I didn't see much in it but the sigma is faster, which is what I needed as the Canon f/4 simply was no good for indoor sports.

I would say Canon F4, if you can get the IS version then even better, it will be lighter for out an about, which is what you say you want it for.

The Sigma 70-200 /2.8 and the Canon 70-200 f/4 are indeed different beasts and the Canon f/4 is a lot lighter.

Thanks for the replies so far.

At the moment I keep switching from one to the other and can't make my mind up.

I'm starting to think that the canon will suit my needs more as it is lightweight and will complete a nice set of f4 Zooms that I can carry around in a small bag. If I need f2.8 then I can wheel out the 120-300.

it makes sense for you to go for the canon consider you got a 120-300 f2.8 sigma already.

If this is the first fast zoom lens then i would definate go for f2.8.

Go for the L Lens lol

Right I'm going for the canon I think. It suits my needs better.

Thanks for the help.
