Will soon be time for me to get a a new telephoto lens. The budget will strech to the three lenses in the title. My favorite type of subjects is swimming/waterpolo and triathlons and then also take camera for days out and other general stuff!

The indoor nature of the swimming and waterpolo is what draws me to the f2.8 for the Tamaron and the Sigma but some reviews say they dont get to there best until around f4 anyway so am i best off just going for the canon anyway . For the triathlons the Canon f4 would prob be the best as usually only used in pretty good weather oudoors

Anyone who has used any of the above generally or more speciffic for inside swimming pools / sports halls give me any advice?

Thanks

Go for the 70-200mmL, you cant go wrong. Super sharp, excellent build quality, quick focus and doesn't weight a ton

I have the tamron, and it is sharp wide open IMO.

However, for fast sports, I would opt for either the Canon or the Sigma, depending on whether you need f2.8 or not, as both of these focus faster than the tamron.

It really comes down to whether you need the f2.8 or not, like some already said. If you're mainly going to be using it outdoors, I'd go for the Canon. The L-series build quality will help it survive a few knocks outdoors, too. I'm actually hoping to pick one up myself in the next week or two :D

Thanks for the replies, if I was only shooting outdoor then I would go for the canon. As it would be used indoors at swimming pools is what is drawing me to the f2.8! Not sure how much difference f4 to f2.8 would make to shutter speed at 200mm! Aaarrrrgggghhh......decisions!

Well since f4 to 2.8 is a full stop you would get double the shutter speed....! I personally would go for the Canon here - I do think that the Canon autofocus will be worth it. The added bonus is better resell value.

You mean half the shutter speed . . .

Ah yes - I suppose thats a 'glass half empty or full' type thing.....I would have said double meaning faster but I guess some people understand that as slower.

(Actually come to think of it probably everyone apart from myself!)

I suppose it's easier to think of it as doubling, but that train of thought gets messy when you go into 1sec+ exposures.

But I supposed since the OP is talking about sports, saying doubling makes more sense, so I'm just being a pedantic idiot :D :bonk:

Dark indoor swimming pool might even mean 135mm f/2 or 85mm f/1.8 - or 1D mkIV (high ISO) - or even both! It depends how dark. What does it meter at f/2.8 or f/4 ISO1600. It should be well over 1/250s, and ideally over 1/500-1/1000s for fast action.

Well if you crank ISO up he might achieve 1/500 with f4 - hopefully its not THAT dark! Whether its acceptable noise wise would be something else though. I haven't tried the 40D at high ISO so wouldn't know.
