My partner was bought a dSLR for Crimble (Nikon D3200) and is wondering about a Tablet for lazy/casual photo editing.

She's looking at a Galaxy Tab 3 - 8 inch. The questions are around:
1) The device managing the 24 MP files - does it have enough oooomph? (JPEG or RAW - depends on what options there are for processing uploaded pictures)
2) Getting the pictures onto the device in the first place - I can see 3 options
a) Buy a cable to connect the camera via micro-USB and download software from Google Play Store to transfer the files
b) Use a micro SD card with adapter in the camera
c) Uploading pictures to the home network and accessing them via Wi-Fi

She's seen me using Snapseed & Photoshop Touch on my iPad 2 - which has been fine with 6 MP Nikon D40 JPEGs

I'm encouraging her just to shoot RAW and use my behemoth PC to select and post-process pictures via Lightroom, but there are two problems with this:
a) She finds it intimidating
b) In a way I think it'd take the fun out of it. She knows I spend long hours sat processing professional shoots and I suppose she doesn't like the associations of stepping into my "office" for what is meant to be a relaxed/fun hobby.
c) She wants a new toy of her own to play with.

Daniel,

I've had 2 galaxy tab's and now own the note 3 (6") and the note 10.1

Editing is 1,000,000% better / more efficient with a stylus so for me now, the only way to edit is with something like the note where you can be precise.

RE getting images onto the tablet, I just use a cable and card reader.

Thank you fill.
I don't think budget stretches to a Note, although I like the idea.
I'm hoping to persuade her to use the proper 'puter when she gets seriously into it further down the line :)

I am thinking of the tab 3 8inch.
Sort of best all round price for ram upgrades and size.

I have a note 2 and have used it for raw files from my canon 70d via photo mate r2
It runs ok with 2 gb of ram from the note 2. Just a little anoying with the smaller screen

oh and to the OP, have a look at getting a "usb on the go" cable and reading direct from the camer or via a normal SD (full size) card
(Can show link or to my stuff if needed)

I do abit on the Galaxy Tab2 10.1..

I Use a usb cable to connect straight to the camera to download pics, but if that's playing up (as they do) I have an adapter too.. Both work great.
I sometimes upload them to Dropbox, but only when i'm at home and the cards already in the PC..

I use my finger, but a stylus would be so much better I think.. I was thinking of investing in one.

The Tab2 is fine for editing my RAWs, so i'd guess the Tab3 would be better..?

You could have just bought one of the new 8" Windows tablets and just used Photoshop ;).

Now I want one!!!

The surface 2 looks nice. Runs on full windows 8 so presumably you can install anything you would on a pc...

Only if you get the Pro version.. I think the lesser model can't have anymore software (other than Apps) installed on them, as it runs RT version of Windows 8.1

How do they stack up price wise?

The new batch of 8" Bay Trail tablets (from Toshiba, Dell, Asus, Lenovo) run full Windows 8.1 so can install anything you like as well.

Priced from £249 makes them easier on the wallet as something to play about with as well ;).

Not bad but how does it run? Would have thought it would be a little heavy for it.
Also software cost wise touch for tablets works well for 6 or 7 quid. With snapseed (free) and photo mate (6 quid?) V 60ish for ps
elements.

It's actually quite usable, I haven't done much (it was more a "let's see if it works" than a plan to actually do something). I don't really think any sub 11" screen is all that optimal for editing though.

I use Snapseed on the iPad, but while it works for very basic editing it has no real finesse or true control over the edit.

The Win8 tablet also has the advantage that it can be connected to any size display you might want to use (and also use a mouse for extra control).

much the same as the tab I have then.
Been playing with a full gimp and inkscape with a mouse and keyboard. (Prepackaged basicly an emulated linux session... sounds geeky but its not that hard and comes from the play store)

I think I would prefer Snapseed over gimp, but each to their own. There isn't much choice for those who want to dabble with Linux. Not my idea of fun ;).

I ordered a small keyboard to use with the Encore, and it works like a dream and gives a whole new dimension to control and usability on the go (other than Amazon sending me a 2.4Ghz one instead of Bluetooth so I'll probably have to arrange an exchange or refund on it :().

This was the original:

Other than being 2.4Ghz, its well made and easy to use, nice smooth touchpad, keys large enough to use (and backlit). I might well keep it as a spare if I ever use my laptop to stream to a TV (it comes with a USB WiFi dongle).

I've just ordered this one as a replacement in the interim (hopefully its as well made):

I've been looking at one of those for my raspberry pi. The reviews of them across a few sites all come out good.

If you are looking at WiFi connected the Rii I linked to in the first link is excellent quality (though if they send out the proper Bluetooth version it should work equally well, I notice it lists a BT adapter included so would work on a non-BT computer).
