hello

i am taking photos for a school prom, and is my first (im 16) and i have recently purchased a backdrop support/background/hotlights so that it is somewhat as professional as it could get

and i was wondering what sort of prices i should charge for prints, i planned to do 6x4 and a4 copies and worked out that it would cost veyr roughly 40p and 80p to produce each respectively, taking in consideration of paper and ink cost

what are your thoughts?

Arnie - if your thinking of printing them yourself, don't :) - it costs a lot more than you realise. I use photobox, and can do a 6x4 - for a special dance class for £1.20, as they cost me something like £0.17 each but there is £1.50 postage on top. So try to get all the orders together where possible.

hmmmmmm

how long would it take to do that?
cause the prom is on a saturday, i planned to print on the sunday and have distributed by the monday?

oviously it wont be as fast as that but if its say a weeks wait then prehaps im not so fussed about how much cheaper it is

well sounds like an option, need to do the math really since a4 cost a minimum of £1.10 acording to the website

but thanks for the suggestion

and so what do you recon i should charge people for the prints?

what would a realistic price be, that would not put people off from buying and stil make me a reasonable profit

You should try and get yourself some strut mounts to put the pictures in. You can then charge a little more for them too (for a cost of about 30p each).

I retail my 7x5, mounted at £9.00 on events. Remember, you're not there to cover cost, you're there to make money (I assume?!). An A4 mounted I charge at £12.00

If you work out hours spent setting up, doing the shoot, getting back and any PP work, and say it's 15hours total - how much do you realistically want to earn? Does £10 a print give you that etc

I would say you should be charging about £5 for a 6X4. Don't undersell yourself.

Lee where do you get strut mounts for 30p, how many thousand do you need buy? Cheapest I've found is picturelizard.

I buy direct from the manufacturer who makes them for Spicer. Granted I usually buy 2000 7x5's and 2000 A4's at once - the 7x5's are 30p each and the A4's are 33p.

They're good quality too - will get a snap of one shortly for you.

The company is called Crown Manufacturing in Rotherham.
You need to be a registered/recognised tog with Spicer before you can purchase from them though.

Their telephone number is 01709 562957

Hope this helps !!
