Now that is one, well ok two, nice spirals - sharp and I do like the shadows. Silhouette is marginal but Wow what a lovely image

Hi Carl, Yes it was the first thing that sprang to mind . I got the idea when I went down the garden and saw the sharp shadows on the patio! Yes what a showhorn was that bit naughty as its not a silhouette at all .

Machine: I've never had anything British but I do love bikes and she is stunning. Spot on.
Alphabet: Great history to that. Like the fact that you have spelt out the theme
Experiment: Great expression. Perfect for the theme.
Household: You have achieved what I spent ages trying to do but failed. Spot on
Spiral: Thanks for the intro. I nearly spat my tea all over the screen Good shot - it works really well with the shadows too.
Silhouette: It's close but not really working as a silhouette photo for me - sorry. Lovely poppy field shot though.

I have never had any thing Japanese, bike wise so guess that makes us quits

Silhouette, Na, your right doesn't even come close, but I had to up something to fill the gap between Spring and Animal

Spiral - Excellent, like the shadow positioning and the light, nothing more to say its a great image

Silhouette - This shot is really up my street and i think the trees are in silhouette but the rest im afraid doesn't lead you to that theme, its a beaut of a photo but I too didn't master this theme and pulled too much detail in the shadows and foreground to earn the silhouette status.

Hi Nathan, I always get stuck on these theme's brain just goes blank. Not hard with my brain Spiral I found hard but now I see the damn things everywhere!
Yes I'm quite happy to accept its not a silhouette perhaps i'll correct it on a reshoot, to ease my conscience

Animal ... Awesome frog shot ... that fact that it's so skinny makes it more ... erm ... unusual ... poor thing. I like the crop, OK another half inch on the LHS would do no harm but I like that empty space on the RHS.

Medical ... love the lines or line I can't help but follow. The light on the far side and the sky are pretty amazing too.

Hi Steve ...I'm on a major catching up session, I went back a page and caught:

Broken ... I like it as it is uncropped with a fallen tree across the front, and lots of foresty trees around, a really super warm light on this one,
Entertain....a perfect choice for the theme, very grand, but you would think they could put the knives and forks straight another one with a lovely warm glow from the lighting.
Spiral ... love it, the composition with the two reflections adds that extra bit of interest.
Silhouette ...I really enjoy reading your comments about your photos I can't see the join at all, beautiful sunlight on the poppies, and you managed to get the silhouette in to !
Animal ....gosh that poor frog, he needs the kiss of life ...he might turn into a prince or something at least he'll be remembered for posterity on here.
Medical ... a stunning shot, great perspective with the pathway leading through, beautiful light on the field... and an excellent choice for the theme too.

Sorry I haven't been around much, had a series of disasters, was booked in to train a load of apprentices and thought id better start some prep. Wasn't a big deal as I have run this training many times..... Well it wouldn't have been a big deal if I could have found my notes! been through every external drive, the company server... Zippo! so spent day and night re writing the course (needed updating anyhow). What a hell couple of weeks:rage:.

I can stick another 1/2 inch on watch this space Poor thing, doesn't look too well but there's loads of slugs and snails in the garden so its not through lack of food!
I was up there several times and the light was always, pants I think one evening I got it right... maybe 2 but it was a lot of waiting!

Do I have to tell ya?
Yes this is a couple of Bantams that belong to my friend, I must say the Bantams I normally fiddle around have two wheels and were made by BSA.
Right little cuties aren't they. Now I'm not gonna go into my first idea which was a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, cos I spent ages trying to hold one of these blighter's, while my friend tried to herd the other chickens into there privet hedge and I tried to get a picture of one in the hand at the same time as getting the others in frame but in the bushes after several hours we gave up and I had to pay for my sin by buying my friend beer!!! It took us ages to get them all back where they should be.
Next idea was a load of Nikon brochures on the floor and pile of £20 notes..... A fool and his Money.... No one was actually foolish enough to give me the £20 notes.

This was probably one of the last shots taken up at the Poppy field, a bit central I know would it be better cropped a little do you think??? I did play around with a couple of crops but wasn't happy with any of them so would be happy with some thoughts please.
I was actually just making the most of the light wish I have spent more time looking at this shot and trying some other angles now I'll have to wait till next year. I think it a tad better than shooting a bottle of Pale Ale

Just a prisoner of TP52, the wind and the cold fortunately generated the tear, so no trickery here!
Just an old child gate, a reflector, tripod, etc
Now you know its unlike me to do something stupid... So the more or less SOOC shot you can see the un cropped version. Well it was a good idea at the time but then when I locked the handcuffs I'd put them on the wrong way round, TBH anyway round was a problem and just to be safe I had dropped the keys in the camera bag. How silly was that, had great fun finding it. SO I've gotta have 10 points at least for shooting with handcuffs on, at least if they send me to prison I know I'll be able to carry on Photography! Plonker!

Hi Steve.

Proverb: Nicely exposed and detailed and certaqinly themed ... at least to the count of "one". Wonder what a lower PoV would have come out like?
Pale: Certainly a pale poppy. Crop works for me and I love the sun-burst effect through the petals. Excellent shot
Tear: The tale behind the shot certainly brought a tear to my eye ha ha. Strangely, I prefer the uncropped version, maybe because it reveals the torment of being restricted by both the handcuffs and bars - quite like the DoF too. Maybe just crop off the top and bottom of the gate ?!? Works really well whatever.

Yes with proverb I was sticking the lens in through the side of a chicken coop so was stuck with a somewhat "elevated" POV, not only the the little beggars wouldn't stand still, what is it they say about working with children and animals . TBH this was my last ditch as was fed up with chasing chickens
Yes the reason I went for the crop in the end with tear was because unless you really zoom in you don't really see it.

Hi Steve .... Sounds as if you had fun with herding chickens for your Proverb shot, well done with that one, thoroughly enjoyed the story of 'how it was done' they look very happy in spite of the trauma.

Pale, I think works well cropped as it is, the sunburst is a little bit bright for me as I love the sunlight through the leaves of the poppy itself, I feel it detracts a little, but it's still a beautiful shot.

Tear, your story made me laugh, I'm sure there aren't many others on here who go through so much to get their photo, and I love the first one, it's just crazy, standing in a field handcuffed to a stair gate ....the mind truly boggles.

Well done for such an amusing and informative thread, and of course well done with some smashing photos for the topics.

I don't know much about bantams but don't they normally count their chickens before they're hatched by sitting on them? But anyway, this makes for a more amusing image.

Pale - Love the way you've captured the light and, as for a crop, take a little off the LHS and the bottom (about half the stem) and see what it looks like.

Tear - And you think I go to extremes sometimes I prefer #1 as I love the surreal vision of you stood there and then trying to contort yourself to both take the shot and unlock the cuffs. 10/10 for effort

Medicine: Really nice, lovely composition. Almost looks like a thin layer of snow in the distance. I might have been tempted to crop the ?furrow? on the right out but it's not a big deal.
Proverb : What is it they say about working with animals and children! Good idea and fair play to you for trying it. Nicely exposed but I think as Carl mentioned a lower POV might have help. But guess you were at the end of your tether.
Pale : Excellent! Nice and summery, they look very delicate. I don't mind the central crop, great DoF and I like the poppies that are just visible in the background against the beautiful blue sky.
Tear : lol! Thanks for the story made me smile. I also prefer the uncropped version and I'm sure if there's a "mental\asylum" theme you could reuse it You can just see the tear but I get what you're saying about have to crop tight.

I always see to get into some sort of pickle! Not sure who was more traumatised me or the Chickens
The poppy shot was just one of those "Also Ran" shots normally if I get to a location somewhere I take a mixture of shots (although I still normally come away saying "I wish I'd").
Was there to shoot Landscapes at sunset before the poppy's went over. When browsing through in Lightroom this sort of stood out, had some PP to do as there was a dollop of unsightly flare on it, but that aside I liked the way the sun back lit the petals. I did try some calming of the sunburst but it was a tad strong. Might revisit that again!
Yes stupidity I call it! standing in a field handcuffed trying to pack the gear away no wonder The boss didn't want to come with me. I have been "Escorted" out of a few to many places lately

Yes I still might have some work in progress on the Poppy, wish id paid more attention to composition now!
All I was thinking was how do I get out of this and I hope to goodness the farmer doesn't turn up ....... Again (particularly when I was handcuffed).

Indeed they do hatch them by sitting on them. I was trying to depict that they had not long hatched as these were actually chicks of a few weeks old (obviously failed there) Thought if I took a shot of the grown chickens sitting on the eggs you wouldn't see much but Chickens!
The poppy's were quite nice and this shot caught my eye running through them had a fair bit of PPP to get rid of some nasty flare though
Indeed 2 is very sad! OMG am I really that old???? Don't answer that!

Ah my favourite SUPPORTer Bloody Chickens! I only went round to my mates cos they owed me a favour, so thought id recall my favour by taking some pictures (I'm normally the one they call when they want a Chicken dispatched).
With pale I was thinking that myself, to bring it onto the "Thirds" I did faff around a bit, but think I will revisit it before long as I quite liked it.
Yes a prisoner to TP52 eh! seem like the consensus is No1. I only really cropped it down so that the tear was very obvious. Thinking about it I think the Farmer might be approaching me as a full time Scarecrow :arghh:

Hi Ian, and welcome to TP52!
I seem to be on an eternal catch up here. Still I wont let it beat me!
It does look remarkably like snow doesn't it. Oh you want to crop out my lead in I'm mortified. I've asked the farmer to change the orientation of the drilling next year so the furrows (actually tractor track for spraying) lead toward the sunset
Yes the Chicken shot was uuuur different! unfortunately I couldn't get a lower POV as I was sticking the lens through a hole in the side of the nesting box which meant no room for manoeuvre. In fact so much so when they buggered off into another part of the coop I couldn't see them at all. Next time I'll use stuffed chickens (or I'll stuff the chickens!).
If you see those fields of Opium poppy's jump on them because they literally only flower for a few days, a week max. You wont find them publicised because the government keep there location secret as there opium poppies They are fairly delicate and if you get strong winds or rain they get trashed.
Uncannily there is or should I say was, a mental asylum not a half a mile from that field! They let me out one day a week to take photos if I promise to take my medication and not to eat any fellow Photographers I come across.

Hi All, unlike me to have a major catch up eh!
Anyhow for your delectation or abuse, I have scrabbled these together.

Words....
My friends steamroller, I have driven this from time to time and sadly this picture was taken just before it had a bit of an accident and came off a low loader and split the front cast iron forks. Although my friend is one hell of an engineer he has not got the capability to weld up the cast Iron forks. So if you know someone that really good at that and doesn't charge a laughable amount of money contact me. In the mean time as he is such a good engineer he has had drawings made up to fabricate a set of forks from steel, and he's making them now! Now that's what you call engineering!
Its a bit of a shoehorn I guess but they are words and were synonymous with steam engines in there day.

Religion ....

Drove past this church many times in the village where my Son lives. Wandering around the gravestones I had seen these crosses, and they fascinated me. I wondered why they were cast out of metal some had been replaced by headstones and the crosses were behind the graves. Does anyone know why these crosses were cast in iron?

The angle you've used in Religion is interesting, Taken from a low viewpoint makes the shot more interesting.
Geometric. I've no idea what the meatalwork is, a transmitter perhaps?
Are the buildings the Left & Right TWIX factories?

Hi Steve ....Super shot for Words, bright, colourful, and really nicely focused, I think the crop at the bottom is a maybe a bit tight but its an excellent choice for the theme. I hope your friend gets his steamroller fixed, he must have been gutted when that happened

Good choice again for Religion, I've no idea about the cast iron bit but maybe someone will know, maybe cheaper than a marble headstone...not sure!

Geometric ... I did cheat and looked at Grahams post so I know the answer now what a fascinating structure, an excellent choice for the theme.

Never seen an iron cross in a graveyard so no help from me, maybe it was just the time that cast iron was very popular and cheap to produce

Hi Tim thank for popping in! Yes its a great engine, its taken him about 12 years to restore it since they Dug it out of a Playground!
Was led down flat taking Religion, unfortunately the Red Ants decided to make a meal of me too!

Guess you know it well then! I live a couple of Junctions down the M3 from it, and always wanted to shoot it at sunrise or sunset, unfortunately the light was pants when I was there, as it was for 52 and have been short of opportunities had to go with it. Yes I noticed they have wacked up yet another bunch of offices behind it.... I did shot in that direction because of the central tree but as it happens its hardly noticeable. Yes, Nice colours isn't it, he takes a lot of pride in that Steam Roller and was all hand painted by him he was devastated when it was smashed. Still its well on its way to being fixed. Yes I did actually crop it tight to focus on the words and the spokes...
I think that's what it must be a cost thing, which is a bit sad really when you think about it, all the iron crosses were about the same dates 1917 ish during the first war.
Ah so you sneaked a peak at Grahams shot.... Interesting isn't it, I need to visit properly and look at the other items they have there.... This is stuck slap bang in the middle of a commercial office complex.

Yes I struggled a bit trying to find something different for words... Got there in the end!
Wasn't too enamoured with support but I couldn't get my head round it I was just really going for the Gantry with the 10 Tonnes on it, thought that would shout "support" then taken though the Fork truck mast would cap it off.
Yes well that's what made me go and look I'd never seen iron crosses like that before.
Yes its a Great structure, just wish id got some decent light .... Will get up there in early morning or evening sometime to do the job properly! Would have looked great this morning as there was a fantastic sunrise as I went past this site

Words... Is that me or the Engine Yes it is a lovely thing!

Religion.... Yes the Ants thought so as they chomped away on my neither regions, red ants had a field day as I was led down for the shot .... ants in my pants shall we say.
Geometric... Oh yes I did a lot of checks to make sure it wasn't squiffy in fact OOC it was a tad so had to just tweak it a bit!

Hi Steve. Well done on the catch-up
Words: Nice to hear the story behind the image and certainly not a shoehorn - they're words aren't they? A nice clean, sharp and vibrant image.
Support: The beam certainly meets the theme and the same could be said of the FLT. Maybe if they were both under load it would be more obvious. I always think powerful machinery should be taken from a low PoV to accentuate their strength and dominance.
Religion: Not sure about the materials. I notice the date on the metal one is 1917 i.e. during WW1 - you'd think metal would be in rationed at that time. Maybe to do with the availability of craftsman at that location at that time !?!? Nice composition and colour.
Geometric: No idea what the structure is ... a hangar maybe ?!? but Wow that is certainly geometric. Love the low PoV.

Religion, on theme, but a little busy. I think there would have been a nice opportunity to get nice and close to the lower right cross.

Symmetry, cracking detail in the structure.

Religion: A good strong composition and an ususal head stone, can't say I've every seen a metal one myself.
Geometric: Very nice, lots of repeating patterns. Like d00d I also thought it looks squiffy. But it must be the patterns messing with my eyes

Words: Nice to hear the story behind the image and certainly not a shoehorn - they're words aren't they? A nice clean, sharp and vibrant image.
Support: The beam certainly meets the theme and the same could be said of the FLT. Maybe if they were both under load it would be more obvious. I always think powerful machinery should be taken from a low PoV to accentuate their strength and dominance.
Religion: Not sure about the materials. I notice the date on the metal one is 1917 i.e. during WW1 - you'd think metal would be in rationed at that time. Maybe to do with the availability of craftsman at that location at that time !?!? Nice composition and colour.
Geometric: No idea what the structure is ... a hangar maybe ?!? but Wow that is certainly geometric. Love the low PoV.

Hi Carl, Yes well the engine thankfully is back on the road to recovery. Unbelievably he has got a draughtsman to draw a blueprint for a new set of forks from old drawings photos and measurement, from this a mould has been made and he is getting some new forks cast! the Marvels of engineering, thank goodness we still have those skills but not for much longer the way the steel industry is going .
Re the Beam and the Truck, well not sure if the beam is still in commission but the truck we use often to shuffle machines around, this was just a crafty shot in the lunch hour. Should have waited till were were going to hump some stuff around and i see your point with that.
Yes still haven't got to the bottom of the religion shot but will find out about the crosses. Apparently popular in Victorian times but these are much later.
OK i'll just tell you what it is so long as you don't tell anyone else! Its a preserved Airship Hanger so you were rightish! Its at Farnborough on what used to be part of the RAE. The preserved Wind Tunnels aren't too far away either.

Yea I noticed that actually, but why is it you never notice until its posted. Was trying to catch them in daylight but was a bit dingy so had the fill flash on didn't check the WB Schoolboy mistake
The Tear one nearly went nasty wrong, but was fun
It is a lovely Engine will soon be all better and steaming again.
Ooppsss supports vanished better look at that. was fighting with lighting was a mixture of all sorts of lighting in the warehouse, so will have the revisit it again, Didn't really like this shot might get the re shoot on this one (TBH it was a means to an end ).

OK so major catch up for a change here!
After a quick whip up to Norway I managed to get this shot of a Sami lady. Sami are the what we know as Laplanders and the herders of Reindeer. Things that bug me a little about the shot, is when posted on a white BG you cant really see the border should have thought about putting a border around the frame. I was determined to keep the Snow white and not have that Blue tinge or Gray snow that people often get when photographing Snow. The other concern was the level.... it is actually level although looking along the baseline of the trees in the BG gives the impression it isn't.
As you can see a lot of the Sami clothes are not only bright and colourful but very warm! A lot of Seal and Reindeer skins involved.

Chilled....
This is my better half (so she tells me) being chilled.... I think it was about 20mph winds then ..... shortly afterwards it was a full blown blizzard. Well she said it was bloody cold I guess about minus 12 was getting there. We stayed on top of the mountain until it was dark when the temperature dropped dramatically, in fact we nearly didn't get down but was glad of the at the bottom. I'm not going to give you any clues to where we were! The red things that she is holding are my gloves. By the time I'd taken the shot I couldn't feel my hands The grey BG BTW is actually the blizzard blowing in.
Me .... I love Norway!

A very Special Lady! My Mummy god bless her, in declining health I'm so sorry to say but good for 98 I guess, I'll never make that age
She has lived a remarkable life including working for Major Archibald Boyle high up in SOE in WW2. Regarding the shot wasn't too happy about the lighting was a bit difficult could have done with a reflector but the shot was a bit of a grab shot, with the main body of the light coming in from the right.
Don't ask me how this watermark appeared in the bottom LH corner, Syd was the previous owner of my camera trying to investigate how it got there and how to remove it!!

Hi Carl, Thank you! I went to a Sami reservation, where the Laplander's live in the old way.... Some apparently still drive the reindeer up and down the country to graze dependant on the weather etc. I learn about snow very quickly, the answer is to over expose the shot as the reflection from the snow screws the camera metering and the causes it to under expose.

Sorry, didn't mean to ignore Chilled but it looks so cold that I didn't want to linger there too long - certainly good value for the theme ha ha.

Chilled ....not quite my idea of a holiday ...your wife looks perished, but it was perfect for the theme so well done to her for standing there shivering.
