Hello all,

Buying a 60D, Want advice on a good general purpose lens.

I want the first lens to be a good all-rounder which will set me for a good 6months.
Currently been looking at the Canon 15-85 3.5 IS USM lens, are there any alternatives around the same price range 600.

Thanks in advance. Please dont try persuade me to change the camera... it's taken me a long time to decide on that one already.

Hi Jay,

Just upgraded to the 60d from the 500d. I put on my 17-40L and it's superb. Cant explain it really, it just seems to focus that much sharper every time.:)

I did look at the lens!
Do you find yourself limited with the focal length of this lens? Being a short range i was off put...
Do you have other lens for different tasks?!

Thanks Jason

The 15-85 is an excellent walkabout lens, with good reach and a nice wide angle. Another lens to think about is the 17-55, which is very sharp and with f2.8 is a great indoor lens. You need to think about how and where you will be using the lens. Do you need reach or better low-light capabilities? My preference would be for the 15-85, which is especially good for landscapes and for architecture. However the 17-55 has become a favourite for portraits, wedding photos and action shots. There is a substantial price difference, too, with the 15-85 being that little bit less expensive. Of course, there is the 24-105L, which is another favourite walkabout, but on a crop camera some find it not wide enough. Just some of your options - plenty of others to think about as well.

+1 on the 15-85. Great lens :)

Hi Jason,

Sorry, switched off last night and been working all day. I must say I have had this lens on my camera all of this year and on a Med cruise and I have found it brilliant for both landscape, portrait, candid, everything really. The other lens I use is the 70200 F4L for longer shots and that is equally as good.
Cant comment on the others mentioned though as I havent used them.
