I've just picked up a Duracell LP-E6 off Amazon and from reading the reviews I thought it would charge on a genuine Canon charger. Well, it doesn't.

So rather than get ripped off for genuine batteries, can anyone recommend me a new aftermarket charger for my nice new shiny battery.
 
Very strange, does it not fit or just not charge. Surely if its the same shape and the contacts are in the same place then it should work
 
It fits. It does the slow 1 flash for a few seconds then changes to a rapid single flash. I think this is because the charger knows it's not a genuine canon
 
Remember that you need to buy 'chipped' batteries to be able to use the standard charger - a classic Canon ploy!

Cheers, looked at the link, it's local too. BUT, I've had a look and I can get a Belkin one from Maplin for £66, yeah it more expensive but a known brand. Would have snapped up the ebay one of it was a bit cheaper. Might message the seller.

I use a Hahnel UniPal plus universal charger for all my charging now. It does all my camera batteries (with a little fiddling to get the contacts placed correctly) and will also do AA and AAA Ni?? cells. Also has a charge state indicator so you can see how it's progressing. Got a USB socket on it as well so can deal with iPods and mobiles that use that sort of charge lead. Came all but free with a 2nd hand compact - thanks, LCE!!!
 
Try putting the battery in the camera turning it on then try charging it, I had a similar problem with I think it was a 7d battery, that wouldn't charge till it had been in the camera first.

Just tried and no luck. The new one is totally flat so the camera won't boot up.
 
I bought some cheap ones that were apparently chipped off ebay, when charging in the original Canon charger they charge light only flashes rapidly but I left them in the charger for around 2 hours. After 2 hours the light was still a rapid one but never the less i tried the battery in the camera and it showed up as fully charged. Might be worth a try?

It's worked!!!! Been on charge about an hour then bunged it in the camera. It said it couldn't communicate but asked if I wanted to use it anyway. I said yes and the camera booted up!!! Doesn't give an indication about charge level but at least it's working!
 
I had quite a few 3rd party chipped batteries that I bought off ebay and they all worked on my Canon charger. However, I bought a Delkin twin charger as I always used the batteries in pairs in the grips. The Delkin charges genuine batteries as well as 3rd party ones and is a great charger for the price http://www.amazon.co.uk/Delkin-Univ...086487&sr=8-1&keywords=delkin+battery+charger

When I updated the firmware on my 5d3 the 3rd party batteries started playing up, not communicating and not showing the correct levels etc. so I bit the bullet and bought some genuine ones. I've now got 8 between my 5D3 and 70D (which does the same as the 5D3 does with 3rd party batteries) and managed to get a job lot of 6 for £39.99 each and a tenner postage. It's better safe than sorry IMO, just a shame they are so expensive. I've even got a genuine Canon grip for the 70D, the first genuine grip I've had and am looking at getting one for my 5D3 now, but I've always used Meike grips on all the bodies I've had.

It was £6.49 (six pounds and forty nine pence) when I bought one and was showing £6.49 when I posted the link
seems they may be out of stock and done the usual ebay seller ploy of upping the price rather than removing the listing

Thanks guys.

I don't usually need a 2nd battery for my shooting but just wanted one as a backup. Shame stuff isn't just straight forward!

I might take a chance with THIS battery as it does say it work the same as an original, before I get a new charger. Thanks for the links and will let you know what workaround I eventually use.

Well I got one and it charged on an original charger. Have not had chance to try it in camera yet so will have to report back on that one.
