Yes
hi all and a happy new year to you all.
i am debating whether or not to change my rebel t3i (600d) for a 7d, and was wondering if it would be worth the extra money, also would my lens from the 600d fit on the 7d thanks for taking the time to look :)
p.s i am into portrait and wildlife photography if that helps.

All of your existing lenses would fit on a 7D so that's not a problem. The 7D is an excellent camera for wildlife as it has really good AF ability and very good 8 fps. You probably wont get any plusses out of it for portraits as it shares the same sensor as the 600D anyway. The 7D does have a very aggressive AA filter so the photos are likely to need some extra PP to get the same quality photos as you get from your 600D at the moment, but if it gets you the shots you need then it's worth it.

If you're planning on keeping the 600D as a backup and buying a 7D outright then I'd hang on a few weeks as there's rumours of a 7D MkII being released soon and that might affect the price of the 7D for a while.

The question is what do you expect from the upgrade.

What is the 600D not doing that the 7D will?

One of my favourite features on the 7d is having separate focus points in landscape/portrait orientation. This comes in handy for portraits where you can select the top right focus point and when you change orientation you can still have the top right point.
On all my other cameras, I have to fiddle with focus points when I change orientation.
There are rumours of a new version though which might make a difference.

Im sure I would want to reset the focus point in the different landscape/portrait orientation anyway

When shooting portraits, it means you can set the focus point on the nearest eye in both orientations. When I shoot motorsport I often use the centre bottom point, and I can have that in portrait and landscape.

Of course you can still move the FP, but this function means I need to move FP's a lot less than I do with any of my other cameras.

There's also a function where you can assign a Focus point to a CF button, meaning you have an instant choice of 2 FP's in each orientation (it's a bit much for a simple lad like me though).

7D is significantly more weatherproof than the 600D.

All APS-C sensors though.

Thanks Phil, Id just never noticed it before

I hadn't realised you had a 7d when I wrote that.:)

There's a post somewhere about customising the focus points on the 7d, which after 2 reads I found mind boggling. :help:

yep it a while, not a thing I noticed, as i always choose my own so could have saved time some times thinking, I never noticed on my 400D either Ill have check it out,, I would still manually pick my focus anyway suppose Im olddie

For wildlife photography, only a fool would choose a 600D over a 7D.

The 7D has a far better AF system than the 600D and in continuous shooting it can achieve 8fps compared to the 600D's 3.7fps.
