I have just bought a new 60D and was dissapointed to find that i can not open RAW files in photoshop CS4. Can this be correct or are there some settings I need to adjust. Please help if you can as this is my usual processing method with 5D and 30D.

No doubt got to do with the Camera Raw plug in, older versions of PS don't always support the latest cameras.

I suspect its not compatible and you would need to purchase CS5, LR3 or PSE 9

*EDIT* My suspicions were correct http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/extend.html Canon 60D is supported by Camera Raw 6 which isn't compatible with CS4, crafty devils that they are.

Use the canon dpp software that came with the camera to process your raws (many, myself included prefer it to ps for initial processing) then just select "edit in Photoshop" from the drop down menu and it will import as a tiff. I only have cs3 and have used this method since ps dropped support for my cameras. It's just second nature now and works very well. Just right click on a folder chock full of raws/jpegs and select open in dpp editor and be amazed at how quick it opens up all the thumbnails. It really is easier and then you only send to ps for final editing the images you want. Yes lr does a similar jib but dpp is free.

Another alternative is to download Adobe's DNG converter and convert your Raw files to DNG, then you can use ACR.

you could always swap your 60D for my 40D and then you will have no problems

seriously though, I would also suggest the Canon DPP software, its pretty good at noise reduction as well as conversions.

Trevor has it correct, you need to convert your CR2 files to dng with the free converter from adobes web site. Your camera shipped after CS5 was launched, so CS4 doesn't suppert the raw files directly.
