Hello,
I have a canon 40d which can take up to 6 frames per second.
I want to use this camera for extreme sports photography.
To fulfill my need for sequences its important that i have additional lighting from flash units.
I dont know of any flash units that will me to take sequences at 6fps and reel out 6 in sync flashes at full intensity if required for example at night time.
I have searched the net and many forums for information that will help me on this topic but i cannot find the info i need.
If you can help me i would be over the moon.
Chat soon

Have a look on the strobist site and do a search for volleyball. There's a guy who did a sequence of photos in the same way you're describing and that may be some help.

A lot will depend on how much light you're going to need from the flash, the more power per shot the longer it will take to re-cycle for the next shot. I think in this case even with a powerful gun and fresh batteries you may be limited.

What about using the strobe facility on the flash? Obviously it depends on what you're shoting and where but you could try to kill the ambient light, set the shutter to 1 sec and the flash to 6hz. It would work but would really depend on the type of shot you're after.

You won't find one. I don't think any on camera flash can recycle that quick. If you set the flash gun to 1/8th or below, then it'll be able to flash up to 8 times (possibly 9 depending on recharge rate) before it needs to recharge.

Using an external batter pack also helps. A 580EX with external battery pack (kinda pricey) will keep up with the shutter speed if it isn't in full power.

Well i'm highly confused.....I have just got my 40D out and my 420EX and it will do 5....at 1/250....but the flash is rated at high sync 250th so I cant see how the flash would work anyway....?

*edit* that with a battery grip + 2 batteries, not that that should make any difference *edit*

Oops!
Try the Casio EXILIM Pro EX-F1. Up to 7fps with full flash. Up to 60fps with LED flash...
(And up to 1200fps without flash!)

Let me clarify. I was referring to the question, which is about a 40D. AFAIK, there is no hotshoe on-camera flash that can fire at 6.5fps at full power.

Interesting link though.

Not very clear what you mean. The flash fires 5 times?

Not sure any on camera flash (includes the 580 or Sigma flashguns) can out put at full power that way, certainly my 500dg super can strobe at just about any frequency you like but not at full power. I reckon you'll be looking at mains powered units.

how'd you like 9 FPS? Here you go. Requires one on camera fllash and one optical slave per off camera flash.
