I have upgraded from Canon 600D and finally gone Full Frame with the 5D Mk II. Now the issue I have is this, perhaps I am missing something but I was under the impressiont hat Live View was able to "see through" a 10 stop filter?

On the 600D this was true using a Hi-tech 10 stop in a lee holder, live view was working and I could compose etc all within live view.

Now on the 5D Mkii, the live view is completely black, in this instance I am using the B&W 10 stop that screws onto the front of the lens. Surely 10 stop is 10stop regardless of shape and form?

Albeit I have not tried that lens with the attchment on the 600D to check results, but thought I would just put it on here to find out incase I have overlooked some setting deep within the menu of the 5d?

The only view the camera is seeing is what comes in through the lens, and you've put a dark piece of glass over it. It doesn't matter whether you view via the viewfinder, or live view, result will be darkness.

Compose your shot without the filter, set the lens to manual focus, attach filter to lens and set suitable shutter speed. Job done.

Just work out what a proper exposure is for the scene. Then provided your camera is set to 1/3rd strop increments when changing shutter speed just dial it down 30 clicks!

For longer exposures you will have to use a cable release and bulb mode as the camera is only up to 30 second exposures

Thanks guys, I know how to use long exposures, my issue is that with a hitech slot in type filter, my 600D was able to see through the 10 stop glass and I could compose in Live View, however with the screw on, this does not seem to be the case.

Having read up on it, there is some conflicting information with some users of the 5dmkii saying they can compose in live view and others saying cant using the screw in B&W nd110.

Seem to be its a case of compose and focus, go manual, apply filter and then shoot with remote release on bulb.

Are you saying the 600D will do liveview through the Hitech but not the B&W? It really sounds like the B&W is darker. Take the same picture with both and compare the exposure settings.

I have no problem using liveview with a Haida 10-stop. (My tests show it is actually somewhere between 9.5 and 10 stops)

I usually compose with the slowest shutter speed and highest ISO before returning back to my shot settings after composing the scene. You should be able to cover most places with your 102k ISO just for the sake of composing...?

Try live view with the camera set on B, usually brightens things up for me.

Best method though is to set everything up before fitting the filter, focusing, composition exposure etc, then all you have to do is tweak the exposure when the filter is on. And don't forget to cover the viewfinder to prevent light leaks creeping in there.

Tried live view in bulb mode, also black. I will give it a proper test this weekend when it's light during the day and see the results and let you all know.

When i point the camera and lens at the light in the room, I can see the light etc.

Might just need testing outdoors in bright light.

Well yes. Bright sun is many hundreds of times brighter than domestic room lighting, and then the filter cuts it by another 1000x. Hardly surprising really.

Exposure simulation only works up to a point, after after which it just gives up. So you can try using LiveView with a 10-stopper outside on a sunny day and it will work. But move indoors and it'll give up and just show a black screen.
