No
This may be a little premature, but I've not seen it discussed here yet. I've got a holiday in Iceland at the beginning of October, and if I can upgrade my mk2 to a mk4 before I leave, I'll be very happy. With the official announcement a couple of weeks away, I know the chances of Canon shipping within six weeks is slim, and that demand may initially be high. I don't want to miss out if there will be limited stocks in the UK, so I was wondering if any shops are talking about pre-orders yet? How has it been managed with previous models? How long has it taken for stock to reach the UK after announcements in the past? Am I being a little optimistic with only a six week window?

Yeah I think you are being too optimistic. If it is announced at Photokina then it will take at least a couple of months before they trickle throungh. Pre-orders won't start unitl it has been announced.

I've seen sources say that they expect the announcement to be at Photokina, which runs from 20th-25th September. Of course it's impossible to know whether this will actually happen, and if it does happen what the lag will be between the announcement and the cameras being available for sale.

The 5D Mk III was announced on 2nd March 2012, and sales in the US and Canada started on 22nd March, 20 days later. I can't find any references to official "on sale" dates in the UK, but on these forums there were reports of some dealers having stock as early as 16th March. On the other hand most of the early stock was kits, and it's not clear exactly who had what when.

So *if* it's announced at Photokina, and *if* you think it's affordable, and *if* you pre-order as soon as your favoured retailer starts taking pre-orders, and *if* the availability follows the pattern of the Mk III, then you *might* get one by around the first week of October.

You could ring a few big dealers (eg Parks, WEX) and ask if they'll take a deposit now, regardless of availability date?

ps Don't forget to take your current camera to Iceland as well. You never know... ;)

I rang Park yesterday, as they're fairly local. They suggested I keep an eye on their newsletter emails and call as soon as they publish pre-order details.

I'll be taking a backup body to Iceland, so if the mk4 is not out by late September I'll be buying a 6D, with a view to upgrading the mk2 at a later date.

Does any of you know how much can we expect mkiii to drop in price after new model has been released?

Not a lot. The retailers won't drop the price much, same thing happens when a new camera is released. And demand will be high to get second hand mk3s so the price should stay at a reasonable price. Then again you never know. Best to wait and see.

If Canon gets it right, and is not left with big stocks of the 5D3, then the price may not drop at all. The 5D3 has held a very steady price for a couple of years, and been rock solid for the last six months - see graph here http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Canon/Canon-Digital-SLRs/Canon-EOS-5D-Mark-III-Body.

We may not know until the new camera has been on sale for a month or so. That's when Canon will have a handle on what's what and will move accordingly. It's even possible that the two cameras will run side by side, depending on how different the 5D4 is, if it's indeed called that, and if it is actually announced in the next month or two. The rumours could have it wrong, and history is an unreliable guide to the future in these things.

i'm sure they'd do a part-exchange for a bag of frozen chips.....

Oh, that's so bad.......

Seriously a couple of the rumour sites have an announcement date of Aug 25th (IIRC). They reckon that a 24-105 Mk2 zoom will be introduced at the same time. I find this much more exciting. It's already such a great lens.
