5D1 RAWs vs 5DIII RAWs

Ok... been thinking about posting this for a while now, and Ive just gone through my last wedding pictures from the other day, and its confirmed it in my mind.

I have now shot 8 weddings with a 5D Mark I and a 5D Mark III together, running both all day 50/50 in terms of pictures taken. No one camera takes lead, and generally I get a 50/50 split in total pictures taken with each camera.

On all 8 occasions, I have preferred the files SOOC (straight out of camera) from the 5D Mark I more than the Mk III. The files require less processing, and seem warmer and have more contrast than the Mk III files.
I find that I have to push the exposure on the 5D Mark III files to match that of the 5DI (same in camera exposure settings) which results in blown highlights, which are not blown on the 5D1.

The 5D1 files require little to no sharpening.
The 5D3 files require around 60-70pts sharpening.

The 5D1 seems to produce warmer (and truer) WB readings, and generally I leave alone.
The 5D3 seems to produce everything too cold, I nearly always add a couple of hundred K to the WB of the Mk3 files.

Am I the only one out there noticing this?

I ran my 5D Mark 1 along side a Mark II for about 6 months, and ended up selling the Mark II because I preferred the files from the Mk1... it seems to be the same story now again with the Mk3?!

And the final nail in the coffin (and reason for writing this post), is that I just checked my sample wedding album - which IMO contains my best ever wedding work, and over 80% of it was pictures taken with the 5D Mark I.

Just wondered if anyone else has any views / comments about this?

interesting, that makes me feel good about owning the 5D mk1!

I have been considering getting the mkII but probably won't. I'm not a professional photographer though but have always thought it's a superb camera since owning it.

Hmmm................. I have a mk1 and mkiii. Haven't used the mki since acquiring the mkiii. I guess the only way tuo be sure would be to take the same shots with both cameras.

The sensor is different between the Mk 1 and the Mk3 5D. When Canon introduced the 1Ds Mk3 there was a technical note released re sharpening, indicating the camera may need more sharpening than with previous models. This was due to a more aggressive anti-aliasing filter. I noticed this comparing 5D mk1 files and the 1Ds. I can only assume this is the same with the Mk 3, as I haven't altered my work flow for the Mk3 compared to the 1Ds.

Also bear in mind there is around 7 years of difference between the two 5D cameras. There is probably a lot of difference between the sensors and processing algorithms which will make a difference

I've not compared results between the two cameras personally but my Mk1 is still used and is still an excellent camera
