With the raft of new camera models coming out recently how relevant is the original 5D?

Being a 7D user would this offer anything as a second body for portrait and landscape?

Will the prices start to slide now we have three versions?

I'm pretty happy with mine and people seem surprised that my shots come from a 5D MK1 :D but they were also surprised that my 20D shots came from a 20D :D so I suppose hardware matters little unless it's complete crap :D and I suppose few if any DSLR's are.

So, I'd say go for it if it's what you fancy. As long as the camera has the features that you want (remember that there's no video and no HD TV welded to the back...) and can provide the image quality you want.

i don't think i'd ever get rid of mine.. although i am considering another body to add.

it's a hard working, robust, brilliant camera IMO. No live view, 3200 max ISO, no scene modes... but it does the job and does it very well. I can't really see the price sliding much now because regardless of the bells and whistles on the newer models.. at the end of the day it still produces fantastic images

The lack of live view, scene modes and video recording doesn’t really bother me; I currently have access to those features on my 7D. I would like to know how a landscape or portrait would stack up against the 7D having less mega pickles, but the larger sensor.

well i just upgraded to a canon 5d mrk 1 from a old nikon d70s and there is a significant change for me, screen is rubbish but if you have shot film before i suppose the screen will not matter just makes you feel better about your pics when you get them in photoshop i suppose, i have just started out with a 50mm 1.8 and am happy so far, had to go back to my nikon at the weekend ( canon mirror fell out, dont worry tho its a free repair so dont let that put you off ! ) i can see a clear difference in colour, the different levels of tones and sharpness, if your already half considering it i would say go for it, i bought mine for landscape use not yet had a chance to use it for this as i need to get a better lens but certainly impressed so far !

sorry, yes.. i rambled a little without actually answering your question :bonk:

£ for £ the 5D combined with say a 17-40mm will produce fantastic landscape shots. I have had people using a crop sensor have a 'play' with mine and first comments are usually.. wow... look how much you can get in the frame. Again, for the money, you will not be disappointed in it's output

I'll repeat what I have said before, technology gets to a point when every increase is a mere incremental one and costs a fortune to get to, for all "normal" shots most of the cameras we had 5/6 years ago are absolutely fine for amateur use. If my 5D broke then I'd replace it with a later model (I think), but I wouldnt upgrade until then because it (and my 1D mk2) do everything I need at a reasonable cost. The Mk3 looks superb but I dont have nearly £3k to throw at a small improvement in image quality. I doubt prices will tumble tbh, why should they if anything the new camera (the mk3) is a lot more than even the mk2.
5D images were and remain very very good and havent degraded because of the mk3 as good as it is.

Matt

Thanks guys,

I’ve chucked a few quid to one side and had considered getting a studio set up. But with the money burning a hole in my pocket I’m questioning how much I would use studio lights in comparison to general shooting with a 5D mk1. Don’t get me wrong I would have both if I could.

Depends how much you have chucked aside :naughty:

My 5D with the Canon 85mm is still giving me brilliant and memorable shots of my family and combined with my studio lights for paid work they have made me considerable profit :) The autofocus is probably the only downfall for me, it's not great but for studio work I don't really need it to be amazing.

Despite being about to buy a load of new kit soon I'm finding it difficult to part with my 5D.

+1, superb image quality and imo a real bargain camera.

I've owned my 5D/1 just over a year now, love it, rugged stuff, lovely sound when you fire the shutter, full frame goodness! Versatile.

Think they sell between £550 - £600 ish for good clean mileage ones.

Do it!!

Loved mine, in fact owning the 5D was what convinced me to 1ds mkii.
The only reason I bought the 1ds is because I do shoot a lot of sports and the AF is just crazy.

If I didn't shoot sports then I would absolutely 100% still own my 5Dc

My way of getting around the small screen is an eyefi card and an iPad / iPhone

Have you got an eyefi & adaptor combination that work with the 5D?

FWIW I think it is a brilliant camera, I've had mine over a year now and for everything except sports it is the best camera I've owned!

Exactly. 5D outresolves many lenses stopped down past f/16 or so.

Hi guys,
Sorry to hijack this thread, but i have a question.
I've just bought a 5D mk1 and i am having problems setting it up to shoot
tethered in Canon utility. When the camera is connected to the pc,xp pro s/w, the remote shooting isnt hi-lighted only monitor folder. I know that utility works as i use it with my 7D. So any pointers, i have the latest dpp/utility/zoombrowser software loaded. Any of you owners had/have the same prob. Is it so old it will not work tethered?
Any help in this is appreciated.
Thanks

Are you running 64bit? There are no 64bit drivers. I used to use a virtual machine, instructions can be found on Google.

Alternatively, have you got the correct pc connect mode selected on the camera?

Thanks for the reply whom.
How do i know if the xp i'm running is 64bit? Excuse me being a bit thick.

Yes i'm on pc connect in camera menu, all the icons are hi-lighted when i'm in print/ptp but when i press remote shooting it asks for camera to be switched to pc connect and reconnect camera. When i do this i lose all the hi-lighted icons except monitor folder on utility screen.
Hope this makes sense, its got me confused. It's like the laptop isnt recognising the camera. I've even loaded the wia driver to see if it makes a difference.
Forgot to add in op that i'm on 1.1.0 firmware. I know there is a newer version but i dont think it will help me with this problem.
Thanks
Edit: found out i'm running 32bit

Strange. I'm afraid I can't really help other than to say it can and should work...

Maybe uninstall and reinstall the utilities on your pc? This seems to be what this person did:

And they put an older version of the software on it seems.

Good luck!

Thanks for taking the trouble to find info for me. I've been trawling the internet myself but cannot find much out. I've contacted Canon tech support, awaiting a reply.
Cheers

I have just PX my 50D and a siggy 10-20 for a Canon 5D from MPB. I have to say the image quality is superb and far better than the 50D imo. Using my 24-105 f4l and the width is fantastic, it must be amazing with the 17-40 f4l which is my next lens to buy. Did miss the live view and for the first few weeks kept looking for the button but now it doesnt bother me. Would like a 5d MKII but there still way too much for me so maybe when the MK IV comes out I will be able to afford one :)

I still look back on the 5D with very fond memories. My favourite of all the canon cameras I owned.

Same for me Ryan. I've just got the mk2 but there was something about the 5Dc that is missing and I can't put my finger on it...

Just gone back to the laptop and tried again and hey presto the 5D shoots tethered.
Whats all that about! All the faffing i did this morning to no avail and now it decides to work as it should:thinking::lol:
Anyway i'm happy now.
Thank you whom for your help.

Nice to hear Len! Maybe it's all part of the character of the 5Dc, perhaps that's what I miss haha
