I've just switched system from weird old Sigma to Canon 5D and so have no legacy glass. I snap portraits, people & sometimes things. Not landscape or sports.

Although I had a zoom (24-70mm f2.8) on the crop body, I very rarely used it. My go to lens was a Sigma 50mm f1.4. And, I was looking forward to the Sigma 85mm f1.4 hitting the shops.

I'm used to fast lenses and low iso but perhaps don't have to worry so much with the 5d? So, start with the 85mm f1.8 which will be similar to my 50mm on the crop body?

Or shall I start out with a 24-135 and see what focal lengths I tend to use and get a matching prime or two. What think?

Btw, I'll be buying used so don't mind a bit of experimentation.

Many thanks.

I'm beginning to doubt that the Siggy 85mm f1.4 will ever appear. I wonder if they just forgot that they announced it?

Anyway, you might miss primes if you go for a zoom and as that Siggy is currently a no show and as a Siggy 50mm f1.4 might be too wide for you I suppose that your choice in limited to the Canon 85mm f1.8 or slower and slightly longer primes and macros.

35mm or 50mm on FF is epic.

However, if you mostly shoot around 85mm; well, then 85mm is the way to go.

Like may others have said, the 85mm is a dream to use on a full frame body :)

50mm f/1.4 is a lovely lens on FF. Shooting at f/1.4 lets you work in very dim available light (even more so on the 5D mk II  )

50mm is also a great portrait lens on FF. The Observer portraitist Jane Bown rarely used anything else. (Most of her work was done on an old Olympus 35mm film SLR.)

A.

An 85mm prime as your only lens will be incredibly limiting.

Okay. Many thanks.

I'm going to get a 50mm f1.4 and an 85mm f1.8. Used as always so if I don't get on with either, I won't lose too much.

Whether it is the Sigma or Canon 50mm probably depends on which one comes up first on here or ebay.
