5D Owners: A Handling Question

More often than not, D700 reviewers (and now owners) mention the increased handling of the D700 over the 5D. I was in store today trying both bodies side by side:

  • 5D with 24-105L
  • D700 with 24-70 & 24-120

I found no handling issues whatsoever with the 5D. Tapping the top three buttons and then rotating the dial to change EC/ISO/WB/Drive/Metering/AF was pretty much flawless. It seems a surprisingly large amount of people were under the impression you had to hold the top buttons while rotating the dial. The mode dial and small wheel is also fast.

Yes, Nikons menu is undoubtedly better, but how often are you in the menu system? Plus, you get used to fast accessing the key options over time.

So the question is, 5D owners, have you noticed any issues that have slowed you down?

No issues with buttons / dials / whatever.

The only pain is the power switch - three positions : off / on (disable back wheel) / on (wheel on). It's very easy to knock it from fully on to the first position while it's banging around on your hip.

Oh and the joystick thingy is pretty pointless as well, especially seeing as the outer focus points you select with it hardly work.

Was struggling to get the outer AF points to focus in the store earlier. Saying that, there were a lot of competing subjects in the frame.

I couldn't manage to get the AF points that are in focus to blip red either. That only seemed to work when setting a specific point. Is this possible?

Since I bought my 5D the 40D hasn't been used, I have had no issues with it at all using it for macro and recently I used it at Clacton air show ,the dials are no problem to use, the little joystick is handy if you enlarge a shot on the lcd and want to move the shot around to check certain areas.

Err, dunno, I only ever use it in single point mode.

Most people are rubbish at Playstation/Xbox until they became accustomed to the controller.

When they do become accustomed to the controls they might still be rubbish at the actual game, but they can at least work the controls better.

Metaphorically speaking ;)

Upgraded from 300d to 40d and then 6 months ago to 5d - brilliant bit of kit, menus are as simple or as complicated as you want them to be (Custom Functions !). I tend to use centre point for focus and then lock off :D :D

WeddingHack - many thanks for the mention of the power switch - its something that frustrates me when in manual mode, but its me not putting it in the right place rather than me moving the switch inadvertently whilst in use.
