Edit My Images

Hi all, first thread here :)

Basically, I've been photographing for a short while and really gotten into it. I've managed to start selling photos to drivers in a small(ish) national race series - only small time but making a bit of money on the side of getting to watch the racing for nothing.

At the moment I have:

Canon 400D, 18-55 kit lens (EF-S?), 55-250mm IS lens (EF-S) and 300mm F4 L prime (EF).

....but most of the time, I end up using the 250 as the 300mm is too long for the sort of shots I'm after mainly due to the crop factor on the camera.

Basically, if I were to upgrade to a 5D, what would it do for my images?

It seems a little light on FPS, but more MP would definately be a bonus considering the number of large A2 and A1 prints I've been asked for......

To sum up, I'm quite tempted to upgrade, but want to know that it'll be a massive difference over my current 400D to justify the expense

I don't suppose anyone has some shots taken with both 400D and 5D (of the same object) to compare side by side?

Cheers for any advice,
Andy

It's only money. Get it spent. You will really enjoy the 5D. I do, as do all of the others on here that own it.

I made the leap from a 400d to a 5d 12 months ago. Never looked back. The 5d is of course full frame, more mp for your money but it's not just that, it's the feel you get with the 5d. It's bigger and heavier than the 400d and feels right in your hand. I had originally intended to keep the 400d as a backup but to be honest after getting the 5d, I didn't want to pick up the 400d again and recently sold it on ebay.

5d advantages..

More MP
Bigger images
more vibrant colours
handling - beter to hold
good memory buffer, so 3.5fps not so bad

disadvantages..

Iq a lot more dependent upon lens quality - will show up poor lenses
3.5 fps
full frame sensor means no crop factor so 250mm is 250mm, not 400mm. You need either more zoom (300mm prime !) or to crop a little to get images to fill the frame.

Not tried my 5d for fast moving things at the moment but its was a good move fro me from the 30d, espcially for the wide angle stuff which might be of use for static paddock/detail shots in your case.

5D 5D 5D 5D 5D 5D 5D 5D, go for it, look at the deals, try one at a shop, hold, feel, see if it is comfy,
Jim

All this talk of new bodies recently is making me get gear lust :$

How many FPS do u need?? im guessing not any faster than the 5D will do most of the time.. iv used mine at celeb events. it can be a bit slow for that sort of thing but does the job.. its a cracking camera and the Image quality is secon only to the 1Ds (Canon range only)

Go for it..

Must say, most of the time I don't do rapid shooting, preferring to set up a single good image over 10 crap ones. I would still be nice to know the ability is there for 5 or 6fps though which obviously the Nikon D300 is able to do. Not a make or break point by any means though.

The way I see it is that I would buy body only, keep the 300mm prime and hold on to the 400D for a while as a back up. Its already taken the biggest hit depreciation wise so I'll be able to hold on to it without loosing any more value and it could double up as a 'close up' body unless I find I don't use it.

How many RAWs will the 5D process before struggling? Its the only stat I haven't come across I think....

Also, what is filesize like on RAW? My 400D manages about 100 images per GB so thats about 10mb each. Is the 5D particularly memory hungry?

Gerods - "its only money" - the best argument I've heard so far LOL!

I shoot RAW + small low quality jpeg simultaneous and get about 50-55 images per GB depending on ISO

HTH!
