Anyone got any experiencne with third party betteries for the 5D MkII? Seems the MkII doesn't read the battery capacity on some after market units.

I know they need separate chargers but wondered if anyone has any constructive input as to the best (in relative terms) to use.
 
I've got 6 3rd party batteries for the 5D MK2/7D and they all work great.The only problem is that you don't know how much life you have left in them.That aint a problem for most shooting but for one chance only shooting I stick to the Canon batts that give you a read out.
The last ones I bought were off the bay.I got a phottix batt grip and 2 included batts for the 5D MK2 for £45.The grip is virtually identicle to the Canon one but made of plastic rather than metal.
I don't think any of the 3rd party batts give a readout for power on the 5D MK2 or 7D at the minute.

I guess I got the answers I expected and confirmed my intent of only using the third party units as emergency backup.
 
Also dont forget that the 3rd party batteries will not charge in the offical charger, so you end up having to carry a seperate charger for them which is a PITA at times.

I have a couple which I got with a 3rd party 5D grip, my plan is to charge them up and take them with me to Kenya without the charger, just as a backup as some lodges dont have power during the day so getting things charged can be touch and go, that way they are there as a last ditch back up,

EDIT - (Whoops sorry just noticed you mentioned the seperate charger issue in your first post - Sorry) Sunday morning eyes!
 
I've been using 3rd Party batteries since getting my 5D MKII last year, I refuse to pay the £70 for an official battery when I can get 8 3rd party ones for the same price.

They function identically, apart from time remaining.
The battery logo will flash when it's near flat, having a spare or two in your pocket makes this a non issue. The 3rd party charger that comes with them is in my experience more reliable than the canon one which started getting fussy about charging the canon battery.

Go for it, your saving a fortune for very little in my opinion.

Don't forget the non Canon charger will also charge your Canon battery. Only one charger to carry :D

Never realised the battery logo flashes on non genuines when they are flat, great thing to know :D
