5D MKII - New firmware

Great... Many thanks for that link David. Canon did say mid March.

I've downloaded it twice now and both times the executable fails with a 131 error. (XP and windows 7 PC's)

Had that happen to me as well.. it looks like it's downloading about half the file then giving up.

Oh well, I wasn't planning to shoot any 24p video today anyway :D Try again tomorrow!

I had exactly the same problem - massively long wait for the download, and then it failed when run.

Finally went with an alternative that downloaded and installed quicker than just the original download.

For PC and Windows http://www.michelbakkenes.com/dl/eos5d2203.exe

Haven't tried this one, as it's for a Mac, but the link is from the same source as the one above.

Thanks for the link Derek.... very fast download.

Will upgrade later today.

Paul.

The guys from the Dpreview forum are having the same problem. It seems everyone is downloading it at the same time.
I was quick enough and able to achieve an incredible download speed of 10Kbps, using the official link. :D

I can't believe they haven't done 50/60 FPS at 1080p or even 720p. If the 550D can then it seams silly to not have it on a 5D II ... the 5D III must be coming soon ;)

60p at 1080p would be very complicated, but 720p should work fine and I don't know why they didn't try to introduce that option.
About the 5D Mark III, don't expect it to come any time soon. The first generation of the 5D was in the market for 3 years and 3 months before the Mark II came out. I don't expect Canon to keep it in the market for that long, but I also don't believe we'll see a new model before the Summer/Winter of 2011.

The firmware was a wasted opportunity, so many other issues on the still side they could have improved :(

I've never even turned the video function on!

I also rarely do video, but I'm happy with this firmware and I have the intention to explore it a little more.
Most of the issues on the still photography mode are impossible to solve by a firmware update and the camera is already very, very good. The AF may be slow, but people who buy it, know this is not a body for sports.
On the other hand, the video mode was lacking a lot of features and that's why Canon decided to concentrate on that side. Taking in account the number of people who are buying the camera for video only, I think I can understand that decision. :)

hey guys what does this firmware do? FIX?

NIK

All downloaded and installed fine here. Site speed was good.

Have to say since I've got the camera I have played with the video more than anything else and am looking forward to trying this new firmware and its options for video.

Robert,

Sure I've read that you purchased the hotshoe microphone and have been pleased with it, where/which one did you go for fella?

TIA

24P oh man you can even see the difference straight away..

I have enjoyed using the video feature and will do even more now

applied! not sure what i've gained, but its done, safely. yay.

My camera now makes the coffee and does the ironing.
An excellent upgrade I'd say. :)

Sony ECM-MSD1 from Amazon. Not used it with the new firmware yet. It uses a LR44 button cell and you have to remember to turn it on and then turn it off after - which is proving hard to do (remembering :) ).

Sound quality is OK (maybe a touch short on bass but not 'tinny') it doesn't pick up IS noise. Just like the onboard mic though there is background hiss. Need to play with the new manual gain control to see if I can reduce it. Not tried it outdoors yet to see if the foam cover is any good.

Good enough for what I need anyway. I'm just looking for home video quality and as it is I can mask the hiss with background music when things are quiet. outdoors I doubt you'd notice it. If you need any better then I guess you'd be into separate sound recording devices or at least mics that cost twice as much.

After recent reports about the audio issues, i'll hold off the update for a while I think

the audio issues are only losing manual audio control if using one of the custom profile thingies (C1, C2 etc) is it not? Can't imagine that will effect many people...but guess not doing it now saves re-doing it later.

Seems that Canon shot the bolt a little early with this firmware ... clicky

Seriously, Canon's quality control is shocking.

Yep, it's just one thing after another at the moment from canon, really is putting me off a new Canon for my next upgrade

Thanks for that, very helpful Not

+1.

Check out Nikon's statement on the 70-200 sparkly bits if you really want a fob-off. Shipping lenses to customers with porous castings, now that's a quality control issue. Not saving the manually-set audio level when in a C mode is pretty minor as things go. It won't affect the vast majority of users.
