I have been trying to take some photographs of the stars but my 5D Mkii seems to think it knows better than me! If I set it to Manual, 30 sec, F4, Evaluative Continuous, and try and take photos it just clicks and the exposure flashes at +2 without taking a photograph. I have spent ages trying to find a solution online but to no avail. I can also replicate this by leaving the lens cap on!

I assume I am being a moron so please put me out of my misery!

I'm trying to but it won't let me take the photos! Could it be because I have mirror lockup on?

Mirror lock up requires you to press the shutter button twice to take the photo.

You shouldn't need mirror lock up with a 30 second exposure at night.

So little light will hit the sensor a little bit of mirror slap / shake won't be noticeable.

You might be better off using the long exposure noise reduction function which takes two photos and then maps out any hot pixels

Are you trying to use autofocus?

The Canon 5DII shutter button by default will focus the lens (if autofocus is used) and release the shutter when focus is achieved.

Because your subject is probably too dark for AF to work, focus is not achieved and the camera will not release the shutter even though the shutter button is pressed.

If this is your problem, you can fix this by using manual focus and/or configuring the camera to use "Back Button Focus".

Here is an article that explains how to configure this: http://timfordphoto.com/how-and-why-to-use-back-button-focus/
