Now before anyone shoots me down on this, I just want to ask people's opinions if it is worth purchasing one of these new right now, seeing as there is a possibility it could be replaced next year? I say next year because I believe it was first released circa 2008...?

Will Canon release a better camera than the 5D mk II? Yes.
Will they release it soon? Yes.
Will the 5D mk II still take excellent photos? Yes.
Will you want the new camera when it is released if you buy a 5DII now? Yes.

If you keep waiting for the newest cameras you will either pay the high price a brand new model commands or you will wait a while until the price falls and risk it being passed by an even newer model.

You have a 60D which is an excellent camera. What appeals about a 5D?
 
Ian makes agood point. If your a serious landscape togger it 'may' be worth waiting
 
Ian makes a very valid point and this is kind of what I expected.

I'm really getting into landscapes and portrait and when I read about these subjects it seems FF is discussed quite a lot. I really like the 60d and I have even wondered if the 7d may of been a better choice? Even though it is basically the same processor.
 
I'm sure Canon will release new cameras regularly. I've just got a 7D, brought about 3 days after Canon announced it was making a big announcement in the near future. Many rumours then floated of a new 5D3, 1D5 or 7D2. Should I wait and see or just buy the 7D I wanted. Hell yeah, I knew it was gonna take time to save even more for a "new" model. I got my 7D and now I've never been happier. I'm sure for what you're taking pics of the 5D2 will be perfect now and it'll still be perfect when the 5D3 comes out.
 
It might seem counterintuitive, but might you consider a 5D mark 1 for the time being to try full frame and see how you like it?

ISO performance will still be better than the 60D, the AF is the same as the 5D2 (I think) and I doubt many people get much out of having the 21MP files for the most part. It'll be less than half the cost of a 5D2 so could be worth thinking about?

Plus if you do decide to go with a 5D3 when they come out, the 5DC/1 prices will take a much smaller hit than the 5D2s will.
 
I think the price of the MKII will remain fairly bouyant even if a sucessor is announced. Its a stunning camera (I use two of them day in day out) and the price differential of any new offering wouldn't be able to pull me away from my MKII's

I've had a 20D since they first came out and have recently picked up a used 5D and G1 and I have to say that apart from noise at higher ISO settings and how it cleans up in post capture processing if I don't look at the file names I honestly have problems remembering what pictures where taken with what camera. Any contrast and saturation differences melt away in processing and all can produce great prints up to A3 and that's good enough for me.

FF will possibly change your framing / positioning and lens choices and may possibly give your images a different look but as for actual IQ at normal print and viewing sizes and distances I'd honestly be a little surprised if you see a great difference from what you've got now and I'd imagine that the 60D/7D differences will be next to invisible.

Hi

When I was speaking to a Canon rep at Jessops (not a staff member of Jessops) he was asking what I shoot and said the 7D was perfect for sports / motorsport etc due to the AF system and the 5D MkII was excellent for portrait / Landscape work...

I have just bought a 5D Mk2 with the 24-105mm lens after watching the price fall over the last few months. I tired of reading rumors and decided to take the plunge and I'm glad I did. The only problem is replacing the ef-s lenses.
 
The point made above is valid. The 5D2 will remain a truly fantastic camera, ( as does the 5D mk1 ) Its successor will probably have some advantages e.g. better AF system, faster processor, etc but I bet the image quality will be barely indistinguishable

5D2 has a fantastic sensor but really that's about it. When it gets better AF, and reasonable weather sealing then we can talk. For now 1Ds2 is better camera overall, and cheaper.
 
So who has purchased a 5d new recently?
 
If you always wait for the next better camera you will never own one :thinking:

Ive had the 450, 500 and the 550d.

But the 5d is the best, booked an a course this weekend.

Wouldnt swap for anything

With the recent drop in price.... I just bought one today....I already have a 7D and will be using both... for different things...

It seems the main thing to consider is whether your going to get the use out of 30+ megapixels, do you crop alot or print A2 and larger often?

I had the same dilemma regarding waiting for the new 5D3 (or what ever they'll call it). I bought the 5D2 and a 7D (for dedicated panoramic work) and found that the 7D (which is a newer model to the 5D) had more spec (electronic level, more focus points etc). I can't say that any of the 7D's features were so important to me that I'd wait for them to appear on the 5D3. In sort, the 5D2 is such a good camera in so many ways, that I'm not that bothered if the new one comes along tomorrow. I would have had mine for about a year before the new one appears anyway (I guess I'd have been miffed if it appeared the week after I bought the mk2 though!)

As stated the 5d Mk1 might be a better option. The mk2 and even the Mk1 are very very good cameras, will the Mk3 be better? I'd hope so, but enough to warrant holding on and paying a premium, tbh I doubt it, but then I doubt Canon are looking to persuade Mk1/2 owners to jump ship.

Well I suppose it all depends on your budget.... As stated the new 5D will probably be around double the price of the 5D2. I wonder, how much better can picture quality get? There is no doubt they will improve the AF, they will improve the frame rate from a poxy 3.9, and of course the write speed. They will probably slso integrate the ST-E2 into the body... But I also wondered whether they would use the same 18 meg sensor as the 1DX... Increased pixel density, better overall quality images... What ever they do, i think the improvement in picture quality will be marginal...

I've had a 5D mkII for a couple of years and have been delighted with it. I still used my 20D now and again when it was handy to have 2 bodies on the go at once but have just sold the 20D and just bought a 7D - very impressed. Excellent AF system, nice fps rate, built in flash control and all sorts of other toys. If I could only have one body would I swap it for my 5? No chance! Will I be jealous of 5D mkIII owners when it comes out with all the toys the 7 has - wouldn't think so! To me, the 5D II (and the mk1 for that matter) is about taking your time, setting it up right and getting the shot. Unless I'm in a hurry or doing sports stuff it'll be the 5 every time. They're both excellent at what they do and there's a place for them both. Unless you need something super fast for sports - go but one! Now going for £1100 or so second hand.
