Hi guys,

Anybody done this? If so, what were the deciding factors that made you change, and what other things you hadn't considered about the mk3 made the change up, a bonus?

Thanks

Rob

Wanted:-

Better AF
Faster FPS

Got
Interesting in camera HDR modes
Fantastic low light capability
Better handling / More comfortable camera

Just a quick answer....Love it tbh, very glad I did it....

Same as above (not fussed with hdr tho)

i got mine today, have tried some indoor shots and shooting at iso 12800, practically no noise.
i would upgrade for that simple reason, not to mention the AF

Sorry to jump on your thread Rob, but I've got a extra questions around this, on some of the more subjective aspects...

What about accuracy and consistency of exposure and WB? I've been led to believe the metering is improved, but is this something noticeably better? and what about white balance in indoor and mix lighting?

Metering has changed. It now uses the same system as the 7D. I generally find it pretty accurate, a little bit of compensation here and there maybe but on the whole pretty good.

I can't comment too much on mixed lighting as I haven't done a huge amount, but so far it has been reasonable....

Much the same as most people, I wanted a better AF system than the 5D2 could give me. I had a 7D and a 5D2 and sold them both to get the 5D3 and I've now got better than the best of the other 2 bodies put together. Out of 2,500 or so photos I took at an airshow (very poor weather and cloud cover) I only ended up with about 40 poor quality shots.

Martin says it all. I wanted better AF. The faster FPS didn't bother me too much. It's obviously nice to have, but it wasn't a deal breaker, the AF is something else and the ergonomics just add to an altogether capable camera that's really fun to use.

Anybody used the 5D mk3 for any sports/motorsport? How did it fair?

Rob

I've used the 5DII for motorsports and not had a problem so I can only imagine the MkIII will be better with it's superior AF system. Will upgrade to a 5DIII this year now that the prices are settling down from its silly introduction point.

That's pretty interesting as I've never used my 5D mkII for motorsport, but I am trying to weigh up if the 5D mk3 would cover everything I currently do with my 1D mk3 and 5D mk2

Rob

I've seen some great shots taken with the 5D mkIII and been very impressed with them.

The mkIII is certainly on my wish list for 2013

I did a lot of tests recently, comparing 5D2 with 5D3, for Advanced Photographer magazine.

On AF performance, shooting multiple runs of a motorbike heading straight towards the camera at 50mph, the 5D3 was 3x more likely to get a sharp shot. Typically a 90% spot-on hit rate was double the 5D2, especially when the bike was near and closing very quickly, plus it shoots 50% faster. Servo AF with centre point on release-priority, same 70-200L Mk2 on both.

Off-centre AF performance, 5D3 wins hands down. Canon has done a fantastic job with the 5D3, basically if you miss focus with an L-grade lens, it's either technique or wrong AF settings selected.

I upgraded to 5dmk3 from 5dmk2 and got 1dx also let me tell you the 5d3 is superb better frame rate amazing AF system better low light capability which has helped me with low light kickboxing in gyms etc superb upgrade worth it now the price has came down

Dang I'm sold!

Managed to sell the 5D mk2 to a good friend this evening, just got to get shut of the 1D mk3 and get my new body ordered....the next dilemma....where to buy from!!
