Is the video function on the 5D of any real use or just a gimmick?

Do you need to carry humungous CF cards to be able to capture more than a few nano seconds of video?

If you were going to be carrying your 5D anyway, say on holiday, would you still want to take camcorder for `proper` video?

Thanks

I certainly wouldn't bother with a camcorder. This would be good enough, inmy opinion, by far.

its not bad, but I find it harder than a handy cam in one hand.
It doesnt feel right I cant explain it really.

bear in mind you need to manually focus (which can be hard with the screen without a loupe...) and thus it takes up your entire concentration - if you just want some holiday video, as gorgeous as the video out the back of the 5d2 is, I'd take your handycam :)

also the 8 minute limit, and the need for zillions of cf cards...it could get pretty expensive :P a few minidv tapes will be a lot cheaper :P

Having owned a 5D Mark II and now owning a 7D, I feel I should comment. The 5D and 7D, both in my opinion, aren't really camcorder replacements in the same sense that they're not really P&S replacements.

They're both very good video cams, I bought them because they were so much better than anything in quality. But quality isn't really the be all and end all for home movies; both cams will be very unsteady in comparison and you'll have to manually focus.

You can fit enough on the cards though. 8gb cards (which are £15 a pop) can fit 24mins of video on them (12mins max per clip, usually works out at about 14 though).

So in sum, handycam all the way, unless you want to make a proper movie and stick it on a tripod and set up shots and stuff...

5dmk2 for movie making. Handycam for holidays.
