Yes
Right I have found a shop with the following bodies:

50D for 729
5D For 770 ish

Both are in budget and apparently in VGC.

I have been chasing 5Ds on Ebay for a while and they are going for silly money...850-1000!!!

So I started looking for 50Ds and found these.

I can trade in the 400D for 180 (Body only)

Can't decide which to go for.

Two different animals for two different users Brockers.

What do you want the camera for?

Can you put up a link to the ones you found.:)

I know, I wanted a full frame for landscapes and portraits, but the 50Ds frame rate and crop sensor would perhaps be better for my motorsport and transport stuff.

Don't know what to dooooo???

Get a 10-22 for the 50D or something suitably wide?

Looking at the shots you take, in your shoes I'd go for the 50. Would seem to just have the edge in terms of being the better tool for the job.

Anyway, they seem to have the same sort of value now, so I doubt it would be too hard to swap later if you felt the need.

For me a 5d owner its a no brainer... get the one you get more spec for your money for if both are in your budget... but like the guys say... depends on your needs to...

I have a 5d... not convinced from what i read the 5dII is an improvement that would benefit my needs anyway.. if anything the 5d was a luxuary... but i went for it as i moved from an EOS3 film... so didnt want to loose the lens effectiveness I had with crop sensor cameras....

I bought the 100-400 and the 24-105 witha view to going full frame at some point. but having compared the specs of the 50D and 5D mk1 the 50D does seam more flexible.

CT I do want somethig a bit wider I was thinking of the 10-22 or the 12-24

am i missing something i thopught the 5d was the higher spec camera so surely thats more versatile?

50D.

5D=allof your EF-S lenses have to go. (which I see is one) Replace with a 17-40L.

I have the 5D and you lose the crop factor which is amazing for wide angle but not too hot for the long end so birding may require a greater crop in processing,.

The 5D isn't a higher spec'd camera - it's basically a XXD Series body with a full frame sensor. It will be great for landscapes studio work etc, but found wanting behind long lenses compared to a crop sensor.

I'd say the 5D is more of a specialist camera and that the 50D is more versatile. The 50D have more knobs and whistles and is probably better suited to a 'general' photographer. The full frame 5D is suited to landscapes and portraits and with fewer features than the newer 50D.

Must admit when I made my choice of camera I never considered the 50d because of my lens set up... as im considering changing a few lenses maybe I should....

But saying that the bulk of my stuff if landscape and travel photography which as you say the 5d is suited to... it was also so similar to my EOS3 it did not really feel like much of a change...

My biggest issue at the moment is finding the time to use any camera... ive not been out with one for over two months!

Whilst I have not done a side by side on these cameras. I love the dynamic range the 5D delivers and really cannot faulter anything during the time I have had it.

Landscape/travel photography - 5D would be my choice even if I owned both.

When crop sensors first appeared they were really challenged weren't they at the wide end, but now with a wealth of wide EF-S lenses available, the gap between full frame and crop sensors is getting a bit blurry, especially with the larger pixel count and improved noise performance of later crop cameras.

The full frame advantage is still there without a doubt for some applications, you just gotta up the pixel count to keep the advantage, hence the 5D MK2 and the 1DS MK3 and the wonga you have to fork out to get one.

Cheers Teshi thats really thrown a spanner in the works....I had more or less decided on the 50D...

Well its a choice that only you can make. I cannot see any review out there that would make me want to pick one over the other unless I try them both out also.

I can only go by what I have owned. I do miss the crop at times but then again, for some of the stuff I have shot and going UWA so 12mm on a 5D has been a godsend. Even 10mm on a 1.6 crop is not wide enough.

It really boils down to what you need. What I can see as a plus on the 50D is a faster shutter, I can assume, a shorter viewfinder blackout and live view which is handy at times. One thing I didnt like when I tried a 40D, the viewfinder is tiny vs the 5D.

rough rule of thumb..

static work (portraits/landscapes) = 5D/5Dmk2
moving subjects (sports/animals) = the others (20/30/40/50D or 1D range)

obviously those for the moving subjects can still do static shots but its harder the other way around.

Its not harder. It boils down to practice

Panning is panning, having a xxD or 1D body will not make it easier. The AF maybe quicker but once again, depends on what you want to do.

Sports photographers back in the day did not have 10fps at hand and bodies were closer to a 5D.
When I do people (as such) I like to do Candid....Step back and shoot across the room as opposed to traditional portrait.

Any body will be great for candids with a nice lens. I prefer going for a nice prime. Body has little to do with it minus the crop factor if you are scared of being caught.

i did say roughly..

 I know. Its just as clarification. Main thing which I would determine a better camera for sports is the AF accuracy in AI servo modes.

VF blackout does help when going for a burst short but apart from that, I cant see much else which would change class IMHO.

I've got my eye out for a 5D at the moment but also agree that the prices are quite high at the moment, especially considering I'd need to also get a grip which could be pushing it near D700 territory!

I suppose I could get the 5D and keep the 400D. Giving me the extra zoom of a cropped sensor and the quality of a full frame....But then again is moving from the 400D to the 50D a really big jump?

Until christmas I had a 300D & 30D but thanks to a £100 of voucher with ebay I ended up buying a 50D to replace the 300D :), The only reason I bought a 50D instead of a 40D was the "shiney new feature syndrome". If I was moving up from a 400D I'b be inclined to get a 40D & spend the extra money on more glass (or keep it for the next upgrade :D)

I didnt think you got any extra zoom from a cropped sensor...it is the same 'zoom' as a FF, just....er cropped :)
