Yes
I want to upgrade the 400D and would love a 5D. The Mk II is way out of my price range, but the secind hand market for the 5D looks more inflated than I imagined (about 900 quid). So am I looking too low? (700 pound mark) What would you expect to pay?

I'm watching 22 on ebay ATM.

Do a quick search of your local pc worlds I have seen a couple for £650 -£700, one I know was a display one with no box or cables, still cheap.

I take it these are not on line?

or in the last 3 weeks, this was all over the internet at christmas, i'd be amazed if there were any left

I saw them in store , do not ask me which stores, I am on the road for work and pop in any that I pass at lunch time, so could gave been anywhere in the southeast

FWIW, I've just sold a gripped 5D with 8-9000 actuations for £800.

Bob

Thanks Bob, For a gripped camera that seams a fair price...What does the grip add? 100?

I figured £750 for the body and the grip thrown in cheap if it went with it....grip £75-80 if sold separately. I would expect Ebay prices to be a little lower but the risk factor should induce a 10% discount no matter how good the feedback is.

I've seen some excellent used ones around the £800-900 mark. I'm thinking about getting myself one but will probably wait and see what happens to 2nd hand price over the next few months. Ebay prices have gone mad the last couple of weeks with used lens going for nearly as much as they would new. I think you are better off getting a used one from a forum like this.

Have a lookonthe Canon ebay shop.......-you might get a bargain
And you might not. I've seen stuff go for bonkers money on there - well over that of the retail price. Ebay - a world of its own!
Not that it's always so though.

Currys had new 5D bodies in about 3 weeks ago for £1025. That's the Wednesbury store just off Junction 9 M6.

Thanks, Just rang Currys, They're They were 1047 but there doesn't appear to be any sock.

Hi

i had recently been looking and second hand (in camera shops) seemed to usually be around £850 (i know the London Camera Exchange in the Strand said they were getting one in soon that was in very good cond and they offer a 6 month warranty). Personally i stayed away from ebay - silly prices and too high risk imo.

Did i get a 5D? ..well after having 2 sales go wrong....i got a 5D mark II! Its on its way to me today:) Am sooooo excited but also absolutely broke!

good luck

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 5DII.....is it worth an extra grand though

Bob

sorry...just to clarify i wasn't recommeding it as a course of action, and only time will tell if its worth the extra...i'm hoping the answer will be yes obviously....

I'll sell my 5D is I get a sensible offer. But I want a D3x so I'm not going to consider anything less than £4000:lol:

b****r! I'm not surprised though, they were a steal at that price.

I didnt read down the whole thread so if my point has already been spoken or isnt really valid, then ignore me ;) but:

Why not go over to the "Shopping, Suppliers and bargins" section of the forum and browse the second hand shops for a 5d?

Mifsuds have one for £849
Ffords have 2 - £829 and £849
Or what about this: http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/index.php?id=23&product_uid=967

why have they gone up so much, is it the reported problems of the mk II or is it just the general increase in prices

I had my eye on 2 on ebay today... Both went for over 900.

One theory I have is that there are alot of people like me....I waited for the Mk2, It was way more than I expected and didn't quite have what I wanted, so I'm looking for a Mk1.

I think it's simply that the 5D is now affordable to people who couldn't quite stretch to one in the past. The current prices are flushing out buyers who value it (or can afford) at the higher end. As they satisfy their need and more come to the market as the 5DII's become more available then the prices may drop a little. The fly in the ointment is the current round of price rises on new gear. This will stifle existing 5D users who want to upgrade and also mean that others will be looking for higher prices to offset the increased cost of their 5DII purchase.

I have been watching Nikon bodies on the bay and I cannot believe how much they are going for! Seems to apply to all photo stuff, a Sigma 10 -20 went for £280 inc postage, only £30 less than a new one with warranty!

D200 bodies go for £400, even D40s £200, silly money to pay from an unknown buyer with no warranty........

i think you also have to bear in mind there are more likely to be people on ebay that are new to photgraphy and not always 100% sure what all the letters stand for e.g IS, VC, DG, EX etc etc.. I've done it the past and bid over the odds... but i've also sold the mistakes without making any significant losses:naughty:

Brocks, did you check out that link for MPB?

Budda....I went after a canon outlet one....Just went for 955!!!!! :cuckoo:

Be carefull with the Canon outlet.

You often only get the camera in a brown box, no, software, no leads, no instructions and because of that a lot lower re-sale value.

Also I once bought a Canon G6 from them and the they sent a £10 plastic APS camera and took ages to get a re-fund out of them as well.

Paul

Ive used the canon outlet 5 times, all came in proper boxes, and sealed instructions, leads, cameras looked good as new, prob 400 actuations on them.

2 were faulty though, canon sorted them out within a week.

I did, but there three very smart ones going on eBay last night so I held off. I see they're out of stock now :(

That's surprising. Would have expected better. I trust you left feedback accordingly!

Not that it's necessarily going to help, but it might be worth keeping an eye on your local Jessops...
Although I was probably incredibly lucky, a little before Christmas, I was in exactly the same situation looking for a used 5D, and being surprised at the prices.

I happened to wander into one of the local Jessop's stores and saw a "manager's special" on a 5D with 24-105 f4 L IS USM priced at around £1400. It (I thought) was quite a good deal, but still over budget. The friendly (and very knowledgeable) assistant did explain that the displayed price was not correct as it needed to be updated. She explained that their manager's specials were often an item bought by a customer then returned within 30 days. It appeared to me that this one had probably been "bought" by someone, used to cover an event, then returned to the shop. It was in mint condition with a couple of thousand actuations, had all the cables, box, unopened CD, and was supplied with the usual 12 month warranty.

They cannot then sell it as new, so reduce the price by I think 20% for 2 weeks. Then by a further 20% for another 2 weeks before moving it to another shop and increasing the price to the original 20% reduction again. It appeared that I'd seen it the day it went to the lower price. So I ended up walking out of the shop with the 5D and my first L lens for £1016.

One thing is for sure - when you do eventually get yourself a 5D, you will not be disappointed - they are awesome! :)

Good luck.

It's the fall in value in the pound and the rise in value in the yen. Some new lenses are uo 40% and this filters down in the second hand market too.
