Yes
Well the mirror fell of my 5D tnight. . . I understand canon repair this foc, but do I have to send the camera away, or could it be repaired at a local service shop, and if so, is there a one near sunderland I could use.
I,m going away on a jolly boys road trip tp sky in three weeks and I would like it done so I can take it away with me,
cheers,
Dave

Best bet would be to ring Canon on Monday first thing. I'd have thought the camera must go in for that. Are you a CPS member?, as if so, the repair will be done a lot quicker. Also, how old is your 5d is it still under warranty? If new you could go back to your dealer with it

Fixation do it.....

Turn around is 3 days for a mirror fix, is what my email from them says....

Superglued mine back on several years ago.... It was rather urgent at the time.... Used it as back up for a wedding and it fell off the night before
:(

Not sure how old it is, I bought it s/h, and I have thought about superglue, but I,m a bit dubious to be honest, have you had any more bother with it . . . . .
cheers for the reply,s lads,
Dave

I think superglue could be on the cards then. . . wish me luck. . . ;)

Don't get any on the cards!!!! It will be fine but good luck anyway.

Is there a trick to it, or just a small drop of glue and drop it into place, ,

Fixation did mine a couple of years ago FOC. I dropped it in at their place in Vauxhall and got it back a couple of days later.

If there,s a local canon repair centre I would rather take it there, but if I have to send it away I,m a bit worried about how long it will take to get it back, like I said before, I,m going away in a few weeks and want to take it with me.

Well looks like its back to canon, my great friend Bowz has not only lent me his 650, but he,s going to ring canon first thing in the morning and sort it all out for me, I work in a busy garage so wouldn't be able to get to a phone until lunchtime. . . . . cheers Big G. . :woot:

Isn't about time Canon sorted this out? Almost every 5D we've got at work has needed this repair. Admittedly they get hammered by students, but it's clearly a design fault they need to address.

Well I,m not to sure if its all 5d,s or just the classic, I,m not even sure how old my camera is. . . . .but it des seem to be a common problem,
Dave

The MkIIs we have suffer as well. We've not had MkIIIs long enough to have any fail yet, but I hope they have sorted it... it gets expensive after a while when you have 20 of the bloody things!

It is definitely an FoC Repair Programme for the Mk 1.

I wasn't aware it persisted withe Mk II

So are canon not fixing these F O C then for you. . .

Nope. Well.. the MkIIs have been as they were under warranty at the time (one broke when a month old), but the age, condition and shutter count of the 5D classics mean they refuse to repair. If they break again they're being binned apparently.

We're not allowed to. They have to be officially de-commissioned using a registered company. Despite not being a computer, they are regarded as a digital storage device, and management will not let us sell them. We've been through this a thousand times, but management types are rarely very imaginative, or care to bend rules.

I should imagine it's less to do with them being computing/storage devices, and more to do with WEEE Directive compliance, which covers all electronic equipment.

My 5Dc has not had the mirror fix, Canon said they would repair it free of charge if/when it fails, i was a bit disappointed that they wouldn't do a pre-emptive repair, they will only do it once it fails, which will be probably be when i'm out on a shoot using it lol.

In all seriousness if one does fail through the mirror and it's not thought cost effective to have them repaired then you have nothing to lose by trying superglue. It literally takes a couple of minutes. On the back of the mirror you will see where the adhesive pads were, so just a spot of superglue on each one and just pop it back in position hold it in place for 10/20 seconds and that's it. It must be worth a try mine was on a little used camera but it has done about 12000 since the fix and I've known a few others that have done it successfully.

Well I was going to give it a go, but Bowz convinced ne otherwise, also gonna ask for a shutter count while its in there, never no, they might even give the sensor a clean while they are about it. . . . . never no eh.
Dave

No idea... I'll assume you're right. Never owned a 5D. I bet used prices are on their arse because of that though.

You could well be right. When management types start talking about directives and rules, all I hear is "whaaa, whaaa, blahhh... blahh".

Well as I understand it you cant with a 5d classic, I have done it with my old 600, and yes I got a shock but canon are the only ones who can do the 5d classic. . . .unless I,m miss-informed. . !

You might want to check for updates on the Canon utils software if you haven't already? This is how I do my 5D2.
