I mainly shoot personal stuff but do the odd paid job. I really want a 5D Mark III, but I'm just not sure what to do on my upgrade plans:

I currently own:

5D Mark II
Canon 35L
Canon 135L
Canon 70-200 f2.8 II

Sigma 50mm
Sigma 24-70mm HSM

My Sigma 24-70 is pretty dire at 70mm and since the 35L I hardly use it. On paid jobs where I don't have the luxury of time and framing I still use the 24-70, but it's not that great.

My upgrade plans are as follows:

1. Buy a 5D Mark III, keep the Mark II as a 2nd camera and put a 2nd lens on to shoot the paid stuff.

2. Buy a Mark III, sell the Mark II and buy a nice Canon 24-70 II to shoot the paid work, but then I don't have a backup. Well I do have a 30D, but that's just pointless after using full frame.

Eventually I'd like to add a 24L to my list too.

Keep the backup, Mk2 still produces amazing images

You can always hire a 24-70 for the job, and get one a bit further down the line

(could sell 135 as it's covered in the 70-200 and get a 24-70?)

You know I have thought about selling the 135L, but I love it too much. The 70-200 II rivals it at 135L but that extra bokeh and weight of the 135L means when I'm after something lightweight I can still still get my perfect telephoto shot.

Here are 2 suggestions.

You could get the 5III now, keep the 5DII and get the 24-70 II later when it comes down in price and you have saved more money. The lenses you have now should be enough to tide you over a little longer while you wait for the 24-70 II.

Another strategy would be to sell the 5DII and buy the 5DIII and 24-70 II. In Australia it is currently available in a kit, so we may even be able to get the kit in the UK eventually, which always works out cheaper than buying individually. Then when you needed a second body for a job, you could hire a 5D II or III for about £70, from hireacamera.com, until you had enough to buy a second body down the road.

I would wait a bit to see if the kit materialises and to let the price on the 24-70 II settle. You already have enough gear to work with for now, you'll be able to save more money and you'll get a better deal down the road. Win, win, win.

Patience my friend.

the 5d3 doesnt seem to be the problem, why do you want it so much for?

I suppose that is the real question. What does the 5d mk3 do for you that the mk2 won't? Is your paid work low light?
I'll admit I'd love one but I just can't justify spending that much on a new body (yet).

same here but cant justify the big price when the 5d2 is working great for me, i would update the glass

The main reasons I went for a 5D3 was because my 100 2.8 L macro was front focussing on my 5D2 and I couldn't get it right with MA, I wanted the AF of at least the 7D on a full frame body and I could afford it at the time.

Since I bought it I've got spot on focussing with my 100 L and a far better AF system than the 7D and a far better camera than my 5D2.

The main reason I want the Mark III is the pro focus. The outer points on the Mark II are just useless especially in low light. I also find it doesn't always get it spot on. Saying that, I doubt my photos would be any better really with a Mark III, it'll just make it more of a joy to use.

On a wedding that I did, my Sigma 24-70 HSM let me down when shooting into the sun. The lens flare meant I had to spend a great deal of time getting the photos just right.

I think looking at it, I posted in the wrong forum. Can a mod move it?

I wonder how long it'll be for the Mark III to drop £100?

Sell both your Sigmas and get the 5D III and the 24-70 II :D
You could try and find a good original copy of the 24-70. The 24L is too close to the 35L so pick one.

Hi

I am no pro but the issue you make above is one of the main things that made me jump for the Mk3 i had owned the 7D and the 5D2 9 point focus just left me dead. I like the focus point on the main subject when i shoot not half press recompose. Minor yes but very nice

And did you find the Mark III satisfied you?

Yes.

This may be strange but I really dislike focus 're compose. Would I like even more points yes but wider around the view finder.

Why wider because sometimes when I try to get low down for a shot not being very fit it would help me.

Also for me the frame rate is fast enough. When I did some images in work minster I also liked the silent shutter function.

This is my first camera since the 40D that just is me, won't be moving from this anytime soon.

The focus and re-compose is also tricky in f1.4 too for me on the Mark II. Turning means you have to be spot on and can't move a few mm.
