ordered it a couple weeks ago and been waiting everyday for it to come. so it came on the 24th and the parents decided to wrap and hide my own present and gave it to me on the 25th...

such a good bit of kit time to order a new lens i think

what lenses are the best on this body...

im thinking 70-200 F2.8 IS MKII
and 17-40 L

any others?

Lucky you :-) How about a nice 100mm f2.8L IS macro or a flashgun 430/580exII as there is no built in flash on the 5DmkII.

Flashguns can make or break pictures, so if you get one make sure you take the time to understand it and use it to it's potential (if you don't already!). I sold mine a while ago and it's just not the same without...

The 17-40L is supposed to be great and will give you a nice wide FOV but is an F4 aperture. Not the fastest lens although if you own a 24-105 you know what you're getting.

70-200 2.8 IS II is suppoed to be very good, but equally expensive! I've used a F4 IS and found it to be optically very good, obviously like for like you'll not get the same background seperation and will have to compensate for aperture size with shutter speed/ISO.

So many choices!

What do you use it for primarily?
 
I'm waiting for my 5Dmk2 to arrive..ordered it just before xmas so hopefully should arrive this week.

I've got a 24-105L but am pretty much spent up so will be a while before I get any other lenses

17-40mm vs 24-105mm depends on your shooting style .

I think 17-40mm + 70-200mm is a verrrry good combo . plus get yourself a 50mm f1.4 in the middle . I had the same wishlist, but won a tamron 28-75mm and I'm verry pleased with if only it makes my 50mm a bit redundant.
 
The thing to remember about those wide primes is that the depth of field will be shallower on full frame, so it's just such a different look to the f/4 lenses. I couldn't get my head around my 50mm f1.4 on full frame after using a 50mm f1.8 on cropped sensor...
 
Awaiting delivery of my 5DmkII and 17-40L at the moment. Once that's arrived I can sell what I have and get a 70-200 plus a 50 (sounds familiar :) ). Have a 100 macro at the moment but considering upgrading the L version.
 
17-40L is lovely on my 5D mark I.

Get a fast prime or two and you will be blown away though imo. The Canon 85mm 1.8 is superb and not particularly expensive.
 
When I bought my 5DII, I got it with the 24-70 rather than the 24-105 as I knew I would also be getting the 70-200. Thus I wouldn't miss the extra reach of the 24-105 and would benefit from the extra stop at the wide end.

Both the 24-70 and 70-200 work extremely well on the 5DII, and I use both these lenses a lot when doing studio type portrait photography.

I also have the 100 IS macro and the 100-400 which are both good performers. I think the only lens I haven't got at the moment is something wider than 24mm, so something like the 17-40 is definitely on the shopping list.
 
i have the 24-105 L, love the lens, i used my mates 24-70 L for a gig, again i loved it, but as someone said previously i missed the extra reach!

I also have the MkII 70-200 2.8, thats a fab lens! much sharper than the mk1,
 
I got my 5D a week or so ago now and only managed to use it with the 70-200 mkII on xmas day. I purposely shot wide open and have to say it's a fantastic combo, centre is pin sharp and nailed focus every shot. The indoor shots with 24-70 wide open are also great so looking forward to being able to use at base iso on the tripod to see what it can really resolve. If you can get the 70-200 get one they're awesome.

Interestingly my zooms were all spot on with my 50d body but on the 5D the 17-40 needed a micro adjustment of 9.

I got mine a month ago, and still familiarizing myself with it...

17-40 is a great lens on it, but if you don't need to go as wide, there is always 24-105 or the faster option; 24-70.

In the end, it depends on what you will be shooting.

I have a Mk 1 of the above, and how any lens could be much sharper I just don't know. I'll have to give one a go, just to see if I could tell the difference, which I doubt.

i think i will be geting the MKII 70-200 f2.8 IS...
got enough money for it now but i think i need to upgrade the computer because of the file sizes and processing of images.

used my mates 17-40 F4 L lens today, i was very impressed with it on FF... so wide at 17. so many things i want...

could get expensive :P

Exactly what i thought, as i said earlier the mkI is by no means a bad lens, and in most of the photography me and my colleague do there is no difference iin quality...

The big difference we have noticed is with the IS, and the fact it is a 4-Stop system on the new one, and it definitely does the job!!

you'll love the mkII mate, i had to get it (What a shame) as noone had stock of the older MkI, but i dont regret it!

I'm sure you'll fall in love with it just as much as i have!

this is what happened to me... ordered the MK1... order got cancled due to not producing anymore... now i hav to get the MKII :thinking: :thumbs: WIN!

My 5DII and 17-40L has just arrived here in the office - as I am the only one here might have to close up early and go home this afternoon - and I have a four day weekend to play with it! :woot:
 
^^ That combi of camera and lens is what I'm mostly using at the moment when out and about.
Needs a little work in Photoshop for lens correction at the wide end though (vignetting/barrel) but it's not an issue.

i have used this combination the other day when i used a friend of mines lens... the 17mm on FF is unreal... so so wide. i think i may invest in one in the new year... or try and blag parents to buy it me for my 21st... doubtful i know :(

if this lens had a lower F say 2.8 it would be immense!
