Hi all,

Not a review as to early for that and not enough glass, but I went out with my 5D 2 tonight. First of all it was a relief to be holding a camera lighter in the hand as much as I love my D3, as I said, it was heavy and not that discrete. I wandered about looking for something that would test the resolution and sensor and found it at the new shopping centre in Bristol. Took a couple of frames as seen. Looks good, no noise evident as such until you peep at 100% but no noisier or less noisey than the D3. Lots of detail. Will post more as and when. I was going to show off some HD video, but cant work out how to get it into i movies.

PS, I picked up the 17-40 for mountain bike work, boxing ring corners and other fun stuff like that. My 50mm arrives tomorrow. I have pulled the plug on the 85 for now and may opt for the 135 F2 L which may suit me better at the moment. Not sure however. The 17-40 is not as sharp as the 24-70 Nano, but that stands to reason. I would like the 85 however as personally, from experience I found the shutter slap to hard on the D3 with the 1.4 aperture, which meant 1/125th or faster a lot of the time. I am sure it cost sharpness. The shutter on the 5D 2 is super quiet and like its older brother not intrusive.

Another thing to note is that my light room 2 export is currently refined for the D3 so the 5D shots may be over sharp. The verticals look a little jagged which leads me to think I will lower the output sharpening routine when I convert to TIFF.

So, at the moment, nothing to make me go wow, but nothing to make me go mmmm, just a solid, great camera that will let me take nice photos. Hope my findings will be of use to someone in anyway, shape or form.

More as and when.

Pete.

Look forward to reading more of your thoughts on this camera. Those shots above, did you shoot full manual, and was the iso on auto?

I used aperture priority to expedite the walkabout and ISO was 1600 - 3200.

I'm looking forward to further ramblings Pete :D

I'm seriously considering shifting my 5D mk1 to make way for the mk2

The "new" battery grip for the mk2 is a bit of a pee take though. :(

I'd be interested to see some real world un processed shots at high iso Pete if you could manage that while your finding your feet with it. The auto iso on every mode except manual would be a god send, i'm forever leaving mine on inappropriate settings.

I've found the auto ISO to be pretty reliable so far, although there are times where I've overridden it.

Its funny, but already I can see the detail this thing can extract. The first picture is vey very busy, but the camera has got everything. Take a long look at the picture, the roof, the floor, the walls, the trees, the decorations, the shadows on the deck. Some kit I think.

I have one question.

I like shooting wide. I shoot solely with a 12-24 on a 20D at the moment. I'm going to be upgrading to the MkII in Feb.

What's the best (budget wise) glass I can get to go with it?

Thanks!

Could you advise roughly what size of RAW files the 5D mk II produces?

As a comparison, the 5D mk I creates RAWs anywhere between 11 and 18mb. I currently archive them to CD-R, but I might have to start using DVD-Rs if the mk II's RAW files are much larger.

Cheers

A.

Sorry, I misread it as MB rather than MP. I did have a RAW file from the 5D MKII lying around somewhere, but now I can't find it. Sorry!

Ouch!

This is the downside to mega-high resolutions... all that data to throw around and store somewhere.

I've already had to upgrade my laptop, when I got my 5D mk I!

With regards to your comments on the first image it certainly does capture a whole lot of detail. I am very impressed with some of the results i am seeing from this camera. Can you post an unprocessed version of your first image?

Cheers
