Yes
Has anyone seen this site and had any dealings? Can't really believe the price on the 5D?

Brains, I think you are right, but perhaps the 5d is reaching the end of its life in current form, or is this guy a chancer?

Got to be a scam site. Major internet retailer with a gmail email address

Go to the cameras page - all the prices are just silly! And the trading name scores 0 hits on google.

Is there are site where you can report potentially dodgy sites and have them investigated?

Cause if this is real I wanna know about it ;)

Well I guess you could report the site to Trading Standards? You might have a hard time getting them to care, as it's potentially based overseas, but they also do keep a database, so might be able to tell you if they have had any other complaints...

Also, wherever possible, regardless of where you buy - always pay via Credit Card. The level of protection you have is MUCH better than with a debit card and some CC companies are very helpful if you ever get 'done'.

Cheers,
James

That site looks very dodgy to me.

Michael.

Please elaborate if you will.

Iwould also know what to look for in general - will visit this site now.

Thanks.

Tried to visit that site now and looks like it was taken down - wouldn't open:shrug:

Well, they have the Playstation Premium kit advertised at £210, if that ain't dodgy looking, I don't know what is

Now theres a suprise :)

I wonder how many pour souls have been taken :(

The site is still working for me  It's a pretty slick looking web site, if it wasn't for the crazy prices it would look pretty above board imo

1300 quid for a 1D MkII... nice.

When you add something to your cart, you're asked to 'Sing' in

Firstly the prices are far too cheap. If you see anything that seems too good to be true it usually is, so the first thing you should do is a bit of research. A quick search revealed nothing about the company, never mind any positive feedback.

George suggested that maybe the 5D was being sold off for being at the end of its lifespan, but if that was true then other well known and reputable dealers would also have reduced the price, not just this one single unknown dealer. Everything they sold was also similarly reduced and it is unlikely that every popular consumer electronics item was being replaced at the same time!

There is also a "look" to scam sites that you just recognize. They have the same sort of polished look that is a cross between a basic template and something slick. Like they are trying to hard too look professional.

Take Onestop Digital as an example, on first glance it would be easy to think it was a scam site given the prices and being on the other side of the world. But their is a touch of amateurism about the site which retains much of the look of the basic osCommerce web site (osCommerce is free online shop code that anyone can use). Normally people who sell stuff are not expert designers (or they would be making their money doing that) and are far too busy selling things to be messing about making the site looks as flashy as possible.

If a site does not belong to a big company, such as high street chain, who would be able to afford a specialist web team, then I get suspicious of any site which looks too flashy.

On the front page they are selling iPods for which you can apparently download songs for 99¢. As a site seemingly aimed at Britain you would expect more relevant text rather than a cut and paste from a US web site.

As already said they have a gmail address which is a bit strange for someone claiming to be a major retailer.

And finally they claim "MaxiBigz Inc. was founded in 2005 as quickly become the Internet destination of choice for thousand customers." yet their internet addresses (they cannot decide whether they are maxiblik.com or maxibigz.com - another clue) were both created much later than that.

Domain Name: MAXIBIGZ.COM
Creation Date: 30-may-2006

Domain Name: MAXIBLIK.COM
Creation Date: 13-jun-2007

You get used to spotting scam sites over time, but the first clue is always that if the price is much cheaper than anyone else can offer than you should be very careful and do further research first.

Michael.

George - where did you hear of these people? Google and Ask.com have never heard of them!

Thanks Michael!

Good idea to do net business with tried and trusted names then?

I'm allegedly in the top 10 sexiest men in the UK too :p

Some guy called tkoste or tkostello Seems to have bought a PS3 from them, coincidentally a few days ago ;) And also bought a "Toshiba Qosmio G30-201" from them yesterday.

Probably won the lottery ;)

Thanks Michael!

Just be cautiously suspicious if you have not heard of someone and do a web search on their name. If they are any good then there will most likely be threads on various forums with people recommending them or sharing their experiences.

Tonight , something made me hesitate as I was about to delete a spam email before it had opened fully . It was the little teaser about the 5d at $899 GBP , or something like that . I let it open and ultimately arrived at the MaxiBigz site . An eyeopener for sure .
Checking up on its history I found this site .
The MaxBigz site reminded me of a site I'd found out about a couple of years ago nearly called 'My-DV ' ( I think ) a Canon 20Da was advertised at £850 inc. postage . Sure enough it wasn't a 20Da but a plain 20D that arrived some three months later . Nice , but not what I'd wanted .
After several emails to the company asking their advice about returns and please could they send to me the camera I'd ordered - all unacknowledeged - the upshot of it all was that the CC company pretty swiftly paid me back the money I'd paid and I still had the 20D to toy with . Well , what can I say about this little parable other than here was a fairly happy outcome - except for a mild feeling of guilt about coming by an attractive piece of hardware for no effort on my part other than months long pent up anxiety . Reward ? I'm still not sure .
So seeing MaxiBigz tonight and their remarkable mark downs on top gear got me to thinking again of course : a full size CMOS sensor , and an IS - L lens to boot !! Not a strict parallel of course as even I can see how a minimum wage packer in a warehouse could not , in haste, distinguish the subtlety between a 20D and a 20Da . But , there's nothing to mess up so far as I can see in this 'come on ' from MaxiBigz . If you pay by CC either way you'll get the camera or your money back .
Go for it ? Well there is the angst to endure should it not arrive in a reasonable time . BTW , I didn't have to pay duty on the 20D despite it having been sent from the USA .
Right , time for bed !

Bruce :)

Checking up on its history I found this site , so now I'll relate to you a tale .
The MaxBigz site reminded me of a site I'd found out about a couple of years ago nearly , ( I forget its name properly , but something like Real DV . Maybe , but certainly had DV in its moniker ) and this time it was for the camera of the moment - for me at least , being a tyro astrophotographer - a Canon 20Da . Note the tiny suffix ' a ' after the 'D' . A limited run astro specific Canon initiated by the CEO of Canon Japan who was also an avid astro chap it seems . A huge camera company paying attention to the wants of the tiny astro community was quite remarkable . Anyway I think Canon knocked out a couple of thousand for the Eastern market and a couple thou' more for the west . End of production . Externally , other than the suffix identical in all respects to the 20D . The premium to pay above the normal 20D was quite hefty , some $800 or more I think . At anyrate , two years ago here was this online company flogging 20D's at about £750 and - bogglingly - a 20Da for about £850 ! Despite the protestations , - very like the supersceptics of this forum - of my astro chums on an astro site I went ahead and coughed up the necessary . Well , the sceptics were right of course . I waited and waited . The upshot was that one day about three months later I'd just drafted a letter to the CC company and printed out all my unacknowledged emails and was about to pop'em in an envelope to post off and wait some more and hope , when knock , knock on the front door and ....'lo !! a box containing a Canon camera was presented to me . Sure enough it wasn't a 20Da but a plain 20D . Nice , but not what I'd wanted .
After several more emails to the company asking their advice about returns and please could they send to me the camera I'd ordered - all unacknowledeged - the upshot of it all was that the CC company pretty swiftly paid me back the money I'd paid and I still had the 20D to toy with . BOX, and the only two positive coments here are from NEW USERS that like me FOUND this POST in this forum bcoz are the only two hits avaible in google....obviusly SCAM..

Wow I think you were extremely lucky to get your money back on the 20D if there intention was to pull a fast one. I am not sure you would be so lucky with this company as I think they are gonna grab as much cash as they can and run.

I am suprised the site is still up and running to be honest.

I'm surprised that nobody has commented on post 16 in this thread. :bang:

They did in post 17 & 18 :)

The poster seemed to disappear after that

Robert, sorry I didn't answer your question re where I found it- been enjoying myself at Le Mans and the aftermath!!
I don't normally open what i regard as spam, but have just changed to a Mac and accidentally opened it and the first thing I saw was the 5D offer!
Had it been anything else, I'd probably not have realised the price was ridiculous, and I thought the forum would have some feedback on this.
I hope this kind of exposure will stop anyone loosing money on these scams.
George

Hmm
I bought from this guys Nikon D-200. Paid only .... Shipping was free. Got it within 5 days. Guys do their job well.

So you registered on this site just to tell us that? You have only 1 post, and that was it.

Sorry if I don't believe you

Well at least some good came from the scam by finding us! Welcome to the site, nothing wrong with an XTI (or 400D as it is called over here), it is what you make it do that matters.

Michael.
