Yes
hi can anyone advise me on why when i take a shot with my canon 5d with a sigma lens on the photo comes out with shadows/darkness around the outer edges, is it to do with the full frame?:(

What's the focal length of the sigma?

If it's a wide angle then yes, you can get vignetting on the 5D and you are spot on that it is because it's full frame.

If it's not wide angle then there is something amiss!

It sounds to me like you're getting vignetting caused by using a lens designed for a crop sensor. What is the Sigma lens you're using? If it has DG in it's name then it's not suitable for use on a ff camera like the 5D

hi yes it has a dg so guess its not sutable thanks for your advice guys

Yep... The DG range is designed for "Crop Sensor" type cameras (xxD & xxxD models)....

I think the above 2 posters have their information a bit muddled up.

DG - Is for use on FF ie 35mm cameras

DC - Is for use on cameras with crop sensors

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]DG (DG Lens)
These are large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras whilst retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

These are special lenses designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size of the image sensor of most digital SLR cameras. Their specialized design gives these lenses the ideal properties for digital cameras, the compact and lightweight construction is an added bonus ! including compact and lightweight construction.

Here is the link to Sigmas terms page which explains everything

Is this a situation unique to Sigma and other third party manufacturers, or does Canon make lenses that physically fit on the 5D/1Ds but produce vignetting as they're intended for crop sensors?

I always thought Canon made EF-S lenses for crop sensor bodies, and that they wouldn't physically fit on the 5D/1Ds as they protruded too far into the camera body.

A.

EF-S are for Crop bodies.. the rear element sticks out a little i beleve and can damage the mirror if you try to use it! iv only heard of this and never tried it  so i could be wrong..

It WILL fit on it though!! :nono:

Sorry.....

You have a really great and expensive camera and don't know what lenses work on it

How come you spent a lot of money and don't know what lenses can fit on it? I am just curious :)

That's a bit harsh... a lot of people with expensive cameras ask questions on the forums - that's what we're here for, to help each other out.

For example, it's not immediately obvious that an EF-S lens won't fit on a 5D, and why it won't fit... or that some third-party lenses produce vignetting.

In fairness, and I include myself in this, a lot of people on here have kit way beyond thier talents.

No harm in asking for advice though.

Possible solution: anyone wishing to purchase a D3 or 1D (or contribute to the Forums) has to pass a SATS-style multiple choice test.

Sample question:

Tjinder buys a 50mm lens for his DSLR, which has a sensor with 1.6 crop factor. What is the effective focal length of the lens?

A. 50mm - because there's no such thing as effective focal lengths - anyone who says there is is a liar.

B. 80mm

C. 31mm

D. f/2.0

no, its about 8 pm, hth, christ , sarkie tonight:D
Ill have you know i have a 5d , and no idea how to use it:bonk:

It's not harsh. It's a question that would make more sense asked before spending £1000s on equipment.

And I asked it in a perfectly nice manner thanks very much.

So, if you were into cars and had a shed load of money but had only just passed you test, would you wait untill you were as experienced as a race driver before you bought your fav fast car!! Its HIS cash.. he can buy what he wants with it!! and if you dont want to help people with a problem maybe you should stop reading and just look at the pictures..

If i had the dosh, id have a great big Hassy! i wouldnt have a clue how to use it and would spam the forum with questions..

I think the most important question that HASN'T been asked is:

What lens is it?!

If it is a 12-24, an 18-200, an 18-50, a 17-70, or a 10-20, then the dark edges will be black due to the size of the sensor.
If they're just dark, its due to vignetting because of the nature of full frame.

Which is why I asked at the very start what the focal length was, if it was wide angle, that would have been the first clue without being so specific. :)

It's got nothing to do with ability in photography or driving cars. It is all to do with buying two bits of incompatible kit and then asking questions afterwards. From my point of view I think it is gerenally better to research whatever you are going to buy so you don't get things that don't work well (or don't work at all) together. Saves a lot of time and money in the long run. I have the opinion ask questions first not later.

he may have already had the Sigma from an older kit.. you never know.. he dont say he bought them together.. it just seems like a sencible question to ask if he's having a problem.. thats how it works on here.. you ask.. we TRY and tell..

BTW, i get you.. and it would be better to ask first.. but sometimes it dont work out that way! ;)

How many times have i bought something in error!! lol.. :bang:

I've absolutely no idea how a woman's mind works but I still went ahead and got married...same thing eh?

In fairness, and I include myself in this, a lot of people on here have kit way beyond thier talents.
The thing that singles out these people is that they have ambition.

My philosophy is that people should buy the absolute best that they can afford provided that they are not overwhelmed by it.

Bob

my philosophy exactly Bob.

having the best equipment you can, in any hobby or sport or other leisure past-time won't necessarily make you great at it, but it won't do you any harm. it also provides me with a pleasure in that i'm using top notch stuff so it is me that is the limiting factor.
