580EXII optical trigger once..

I have the same problem with my 580EX guns. TBH I thought the MkII versions didn't suffer from this but that sounds exactly what you've got.
Basically, there is residual current in the foot after the gun has fired which prevents the optical slave from resetting. So you have to turn it off every damn time, which is of course not on.

But TBH it's just not worth the hassle when you can get a very good and much more versatile radio trigger like the Yongnuo RF-602 for much less. See here http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=1809723&postcount=2 Oops I see they're on back-order - try ebay.
