Right, this has gotten me wondering for a while now..

I have a 400d, and i use a 580 EX2 on top.

Now, i use high speed sync and manual a lot so i don't have to keep really narrow apertures even in daylight. Now the summer is approaching, i'll be using high speed sync more and more.

With high speed sync (hss), i turn the camera (manual settings) and flash (manual settings) on, then turn on the hss. The camera then defaults to 1/4000s (max shutter speed) and won't allow me to alter the shutter speed. Now, if i wanted to use, say.. 1/500 and f5.6, the only way i can use that setting is if i turn the flashgun off then on again. the flash retains the high speed sync, but now i can change all the settings and the flash syncs to that shutter speed.

Now, this is where the question pops up.

Is there a way that i can stop the camera defaulting to 1/4000s without havingto turn the flash off then on again?

Thanks.

I've tried to reproduce this problem on my 20D and 5D but both seem to work OK.

The only thing I can suggest is to set the flash to Manual and switch on HSS before you put it on the camera, and maybe have the camera already in manual mode.

The problem may be 400D related

right... i've just had another play.. and the problem has gone away.

Don't understand why it was coming up as an issue the other day, and last few days, but today when i was just playing with the settings, it was fine...

Ho hum...

Cheers Chappers anyway. :)
